Physics Games and Physics-Based Game Downloads

Little Big Planet Announced

Thursday, March 8th, 2007 by Matthew in News

I was at the Sony keynote at GDC yesterday. While the Home stuff was pretty uninspired, watered-down Second Life, Media Molecule took the stage to demo their new title, Little Big Planet. And it’s amazing. The synopsis is a physics-based platformer where all of the levels are made with the in-game tools. Players can make their own levels–multiplayer, no less–and then share them with others. I’ll try to chase down Mark Healey to learn some more. Stay tuned!

I just went through the coverage of GDC on Gametrailers.com and this Game really struck me. Draw my attention to it and instantly got hooked.

That definately looks alot of fun, just to play with your friend if you don´t have anything better to do :)

Might just be another otivation for me to get a PS3 .. at the moment my only motivation is Metal Gear Solid 4

Looks cool! I saw a couple of other videos at gametrailers and i didn’t understand if there’s a specific goal, except a lot of fun with your buddies :D If u manage to make an interview or something, that would be great… Now, i’m going on a quest for more info on LBP :P

    wow…..
    AWESOME!
This is such a great concept, Great map editor, and online share functions prolly make this game endless, I don’t see why this game would be boring, just download a better ‘planet’ if you don’t like the current one!

This game looks perfect, I’ve been playing the music all day, the atmosphere about this game is fantastic!
I’ve I knew about this game before I bought my new PC, I’d surely have bought a PS3 :(

    Day-uhm. I wish I could get a PS3.

But I don’t understand one thing.

“The synopsis is a physics-based platformer where all of the levels are made with the in-game tools”

What do you mean by in-game tools?

The PS3 sucks… Even the head of valve said so. I was thinking this was a PC game… Too bad!

That game looks pee-yourself-awesome. I love the bit where they carry up the slow guys to get the jetpacks.

If you want to see the in-game tools, check out the GDC presentation at http://www.gamevideos.com/video/id/9860 It’s looking really, really, really neat.

This game looks awesome, probably one of the best ideas ever to come onto a counsol for casual gameplay.

Gah, crud. PS3? It took me months just to convince my parents to get me a 360! And I’m not exactly a Playstation fan anyway.

  14. DekenFrost said,

The Goal seems to be to get to the end of the level, using different obstacles or physic.

Not something I’d pay full-price for, but definitely looks fun. (not like I can afford a PS3 anyway lol)

Hah, I knew there will be something like “PS3 sucks” and stuff when PS3 is getting one VERY cool game :D

  17. Kurrus said,

I might get a PS3 only for this game, and I don’t like Sony’s politics (talk about “We rock, you suck”).
Although a console game with a level editor is very rare.
A PC port/version would be awesome.

  18. Dosou said,

Finally a good game for the PS3…

    =.=

Not enough to buy one though.

    Sony’s too cocky.

    Even though they’re getting pwnt.

  19. Crincles said,

    on March 9th, 2007 at 3:18 pm

I hope it wont just be for the PS3.

  20. fluffy bunny said,

    on March 9th, 2007 at 4:05 pm

As Sony are financing it, there’s little chance of it appearing on any other format.

I think it looks great, btw. Good for Sony that they’re finally starting to get their act together – more stuff like this, and the PS3 might become quite tempting… once the price is reduced to something more manageable, ofcourse.

feels like they are positioning this as the “loco roco” for the PS3. I must admit I love the visual style, and the control scheme seems interesting. Anything with a level editor also gets my vote.

Not worth buying a PS3, but a good start in the right direction.

Even though I don’t own a PS3, I’m a big sony fan. I know this will be a big exclusive game for sony, but does any anyone know of any chance of a port to the 360? They said Assasin’s Creed was gonna be a sony exclusive to. I hope they do the same for this! LBP looks like an awesome game.

  24. Kurrus said,

This game should be ported to the PC. Definitely.

  25. Kokits said,

    on March 10th, 2007 at 10:18 am

Hey The Masses, (Woot, go Cortex Command!) I totally agree with you. Same with you Kurrus. Sony did the same thing with Assassin’s Creed, so maybe we can keep our fingers crossed. But hey, 360 gas Crackdown and PS3 doesn’t :P

  26. Sinistar said,

    on March 10th, 2007 at 10:52 am

Maybe they will port this to the PSP :)

This game looks pretty cool.. Whenever I get a PS3, I’ll have to get this game. Any idea when it’s coming out?

  27. Ye said,

Demo’s coming out in fall…. Hah crackdown sux :D

It wont play on a psp the psp doesnt have a good enouph graphics card and a good enouph physics card and by reducing the game to make it on psp it wont be as fun

  29. The-Masses13 said,

    on March 10th, 2007 at 11:03 pm

    @Kokits

Yeah, but Crackdown is only “kill the gang boss and BOOM you’re done” I wonder if we’ll see a 360 port. It worked with GTA and Sony defended THAT with their lives.

So, theirs little hope, but hope none-the-less.

    Fingers crossed,

Well it’s always good if games are ported to every console, but i have a feeling that this will stay exclusively on PS3… Well you can hope (i don’t have to, i’m gettin PS3 :D)… Actually it’s good that this is PS3 exclusive… PS3’s “good-game-library” is growing and growing :D

  31. fluffy bunny said,

    on March 11th, 2007 at 1:44 pm

Guys, Sony are funding it and most probably own the IP as well. This is one of their big killer-apps, and will definitely only be released on Sony’s platforms. You might as well ask for Killzone on the 360.

  32. fluffy bunny said,

    on March 11th, 2007 at 1:47 pm

Oh, and the situation is the same with Crackdown. It will never be released for any other consoles than the 360. Perhaps we’ll get a PC-version, but I wouldn’t hold my breath.

  33. Ye said,

    on March 12th, 2007 at 5:54 am

Yeah… Actually it’s weird if Crackdown won’t come to Vista…

  34. Bonnie said,

I’ve heard a lot of complaints that this “isn’t a game,” but it looks pretty awesome to me. Sure, it’s more a set of tools than anything else, but the point of physics games is playing around and discovering reactions for yourself. Count me in (now if only I had a PS3).

“The PS3 sucks… Even the head of valve said so. I was thinking this was a PC game… Too bad!”

So, if it wasn’t on the PS3 the game would be better? That makes no sense.

Great game, Crud console. You know, In less than a year, sony managed to turn the most anticipated thing of 2007 into the most hated item on the internet.

    And for Good reason.

  37. Bragbarg said,

    on March 28th, 2007 at 10:46 am

PS3 is not a crud console and i hate it when people always say that. Just cause they can’t get one or are a fan of something else. Leave Sony alone. People definatly do like it, Biggest console launch ever over here in England, so that has to count for something. The ps3 does not have much advantage over other systems yet. YET. give the ps3 the time the 360 has had and it will be the best thing out there by far with really cool games. I can’t wait, and this game looks awsome. And yeh, its a ps3 exclusive.

  38. Drone_Fragger said,

    on March 29th, 2007 at 11:14 am

Wait, so the fact they ripped off Microsoft AND Nintendo, Is extremely hard to code for well, Uses Blu-ray to encourage Game Developers to make Huge games with bad loading times, The Fact that it’s the same console as the previous two generations with more graphical capabilities and probebly the same amount of horrendous bugs (like the Wonderfully designed PS1 laser mount which rubbed away and broke, and the tiny bit of metal spring in the PS2 that broke and voided the warrenty when it was fixed?) and the fact that it costs so much means there is less reason for designers to code for it. does’t count for anything?

Also, What does sony pay it’s R and D? 50 dollars? Couldn’t think of anything original? Why not steal everyone elses ideas! quick, Add shoddy motion sensing and online play! Argh, Can’t be bothered to think of a code oriingial idea, Lets just take the Original PS2, butcher it so it looks like a scanner, Replace the CPU and GPU with a top of the range one which can’t be used by 90% of programmers and release it! Yay Sony.

Sony keep making Crap products. The PS1 was great, So was the PS2, then managed to ruin it all with the PSP and PS3. Nobody wants a media system. They want a games console. DS Is winning becuase of that.

Finally!!! Sony showing a bit of creativity and originality just like the old days! Nintendo had the right idea with the Wii and this is step in the right direction for Sony and im sure Microsoft will do so aswell. People should stop slagging off Sony and accept people have loyalties to each console.

I have a PS3 and am glad that that the xbox and wii have done well as it produces a competitive market and hence all consoles have to produce better games such as LittleBigPlanet. I think Halo is great and will be round my mates loads playin Halo 3, i accept that other consoles have good titles but i wont go slagging others off.

This could be very easily recreated on a computer in some form or another (HINT HINT INDEPENDENT GAME DEVELOPERS!). Maybe not as nice looking with 6000×12000 textures, but the game play could transfered nicely.
