Off-Road Velociraptor Safari Trailer

Sunday, January 20th, 2008 by Matthew in News

For my “day job” I run Flashbang Studios, an independent game development studio. Our next title is Off-Road Velociraptor Safari, a game in which you hunt raptors in off-road jeeps. We’ve been working on this for about 8 weeks; release is scheduled for next week.

Enjoy the trailer, and keep an eye on RaptorSafari.com for launch!

It looks rather hilarious. But the concept seems rather unfair to the raptors. Them, versus you in a jeep with a spiky ball on a chain attached to the back.

    Excellent.

I find the ball and chain idea to be reminiscent of Carmageddon 2, which is a good thing…I wish more games would remind me of Carmageddon 2.

Looks a lot like Carmageddon indeed…
    Which is good ;)

I just hope there isn’t as much slo-mo in the game as there is in that video.

Hmm, I knew at LEAST one person would say something about the unfairness to velociraptors. Good work guys, can’t wait for the release.

is it more or does this remind you of hammerfall a little bit? with the vehichle thing with the chain and weapon of choice as the tail and slamming it into people. none the less this looks hilarious and very funnny and fun.

Wow. That… must be the coolest thing, like, ever. I think this might just win the The Mega Super Dragon Game of Thunder Fist Infinity and Time of the Infrared Universe, Ever (TM) -award.

Is it another flash-based game? Because both physics and graphics look simple enough to run on modest hardware; but anything running under adobe’s crap runs an order of magnitude slower. Please tell me there will be a flash-less version.

I hope there’s an option to lessen or remove the slo-mo effect, because it seems rather excessive; I was getting tired of it just watching the trailer. That was one of the main downfalls of that otherwise excellent Ragdoll Masters clone that I forgot the name of.

    Nice trailer though.

Haha looked at the game and thought Carmageddon immediately and then I looked at the comments and saw alots of other people thought the same (: n1 … can’t wait to play it seems rather cool (:

Oh holy shit, you get POINTS for damage? This game is epic. Do want. Is there going to be vehicle deformation? I couldn’t tell if there was in the video. I don’t mean just doors flying off, I mean good old fashioned “Raptor’s head hits here, dent here” sort of thing.

  26. dapaperboy said,

    on January 22nd, 2008 at 4:53 pm

like in the video, going off mega high jumps only to land on raptors’ heads and then explode their head with blood and then you get an implant of a raptor’s head on the bottem. uber lulz

Uhm… while I admire the desire for scientific accuracy by giving the lovely critters feathers, these guys are too large to be velociraptors. Of course, name it Off-Road Utahraptor Safari, and all’s well.

  30. Matthew said,

    on January 23rd, 2008 at 10:43 am

    Space Ace: Well sure–if that was a *human-sized* jeep…

  31. Neo said,

    on January 23rd, 2008 at 5:17 pm

… now who can look at a 3D rendition of a Velociraptor and say that it’s too big, just like that?… lol.

  32. Baune said,

    on January 23rd, 2008 at 11:36 pm

Like it a few things though..
    1) It’s animal cruelty unless your mission is saving some beautiful princess which the raptors have taken prisoner and they can at anytime take you out of the jeep and rip you apart. It looks too much as some bastard just rampaging around the sweet little peaceful raptors’ home for fun !
    2) Whats with the matrix slow effect constantly ? Its cool if its there sometimes but now its like : look people, the PHYSICS IS THERE NOW NOW, WATCH WATCH.ITS GOURGEOUS .i mean physics aint THAT new..I’d say just use it naturally or at least give players the option of turning it off. Cause it sure would annoy me..dont be mad at me cause i know so many people who are seek and tired of seeing that same lame matrix effect in every game.

Is the music in the vid going to be in the game…? i hope it is. and also is there going to be blood, or optional blood?

Looking absolutely brilliant Matthew and the rest of Flashbang Studios. Can’t wait to play this. Also if you don’t mind me asking, what’s in this for you if it’s a free webgame?

  35. Dylan said,

All i could think of when i was watching that trailer was “I WANT THAT GAME!” It looks like a mixture of Excite Truck and Carmageddon, which is good.

  36. Ziger said,

    on January 24th, 2008 at 5:55 pm

Robot Chicken, you mean like in FlatOut? The car gets deformed where ever you get hit? Yea that would be SICK! *in a good way :D*

Game looks awesome…And the idea of releasing a trailer about a week before the game comes out is a pretty good idea, because then you don’t have to hear us complain like crazy about a demo or something lol. Downside is that if someone gives you a good idea…you either tell people you’re postponing the release date or release the game and make another version / patch…

What is that in the back of the car? A kangaroo?

From the site: “Flashbang strives to fan the flames of scientific curiosity in gamers with such historically-accurate simulations as Off-Road Velociraptor Safari and Jetpack Brontosaurus”

Jetpack Brontosaurus? Give it to me!!

Kudos for righting the wrongs of past scientific follies, and demanding the visual presence of feathers on our reptilian precursors. They would be proud!

    ?!?!?!

2 months for a game like this? Not from scratch, right? Or does you at Flashbang studios works 18h a day?
    Unbelieavable! Congratulations!

Dude, this game is marvelous. Really, I love it so much.

I have one minor detail (fix?). I think the driving part stinks. It is very hard to make a nice curve with your car. Maybe because the driver is a velociraptor but I really think their could be a better driver engine in the game.

  48. Ruumisauto said,

    on January 30th, 2008 at 6:42 am

The game’s awesomeness is seriously cut off as there’s no way to downgrade the visuals so I could actually play the game and not watch a slideshow. I hate my c0nputar.

  49. Hangover said,

    on January 30th, 2008 at 6:46 am

hmm.. well.. it’s a nice game, but it seriously lags for me.. AND IT’S NOT BECAUSE OF MY COMPUTER! my computer is great, and one of my friends has got a sucky computer, but he can play it?

  50. Ruumisauto said,

    on January 30th, 2008 at 9:09 am

It does work a bit better on Internet Explorer than on FireFox, though. A downloadable version with some options for tweaking the visuals would work the best…
