Default New Ragdoll Control Scheme

You've probably played Ragdoll Masters. The control in that game, and all other ragdoll games I've seen, is pretty simplistic and crude, if you think about it. All you can do is drag certain body parts around by the arrow keys.

I'm trying to figure out a better way to control ragdolls. I've been experimenting with one prototype in Flash, still crude, but different. All the movements conserve momentum, so you can't just fly around unrealistically - you actually have to push off of the ground to jump.

Click to try my ragdoll control prototype

Click the window to give it keyboard focus. Then use the arrow keys to move the stick figure around.

left - rotate head left
right - rotate head right
up - raise arms
down - spread legs

There's also slow motion when you hold down the space bar, and you can adjust physics settings with the buttons on screen.

Please give it a try and post your feedback and thoughts about how to make a ragdoll game with better controls.

You Should make a game with this control scheme.
I managed to figure out how to do cartwheels and spin-kicks

Ideas, Ideas, Ideas.

1. Platformer (nah.... I think That would be hard, I can't even jump)
2. Fighting game (With Platforms, like SSBB, Hp, Ringouts)

EDIT: Is there ANY way to do an Uppercut?
I can't figure out

I think the best way is to make the heads movable by a single joystick.

This seems best for fighting games.
But it needs better handling,
I can't seem to use hand techniques.

If you ever make a game with this, I want Charator creation.

A fighting game sounds like a good choice.

I don't think this control scheme works too well for hand techniques. It would probably be best to theme it like a capoeira game or something, where you only use kicks.

I'll think about how to do hand techniques with ragdoll.

I maxed out the gravity and then deactivated gravity and The ragdoll became one-armed and one-legged O_o

you should be able to place another ragdoll there.

Yeah.....
Fighting game is the best kind of game possible.
I have some mechanics idea.

1. Grab (using your arm, press and hold [grab button] and make your arm go twards the opponant's body)


And Rules
1. Street Fighter (Hp, No Platforms)
2. SSB (Ringout KOs only, platforms)
3. Toribash (Accumulate most damage, only feet and hands can touch the floor.)
4. Custom (customize our battle)
5. Stage Maker (use our own BG, Make Platforms, Traps, ETC.)

I like your ideas there, rebirth. Grabbing could be interesting, and those different rules from existing games sound like they'd be pretty cool. I should try them sometime.

I'm not sure what you mean about another ragdoll reacting to your moves. You mean physically, or with an AI?

If I make a game of this, it would not be online multiplayer, though it would be playable in your web browser. I don't know how to do multiplayer yet.

I have an idea for a completely customizable ragdoll fighting game (design your own ragdoll, buy parts 'n such) but this prototype would probably be a smaller, simpler one for practice.

More ideas welcome.

You Need To make A jump button.
It's just Too hard to jump.

You also need a block button,
a guard system, and some way you can indicate which charator is you.

and grab can be used to pick swords and weapons up. If you Impliment guns,
make a "Shoot button".

And the ability to name our own Charators.

And I made some Indicator Sprites and a lifebar.

If you use them, be sure to put me in the credits

I get what you're saying, but I'm worried that adding a special jump button or a block button might make the actual ragdoll physics kind of pointless. But they might help. What would the block button do, exactly?

Swords and weapons could be cool, yeah.

Anyway, let me know if you have any more suggestions.

Well, Block makes makes your hands and feet deflect the other people's hands and feet.
If both players press block and their hands touch, their hands are deflected.
If the enemy holds the grab button, your block is inefective

And Jump just makes your knees bend and when you release it, then they jump!

You Should Also put an adventure mode (SSBB lol.) in there, just for good measure.
Also Needs bullet time mode.
And you obtain bonus points for:

-Special Techniques
-Certain button combos that executes techniques
-Combos
-Counter attacks (Block, then immediatly auto retaliatate by attacking)
-Throwing them into stuff


And needs some traps
-Spikes

Okay, so there's sort of a rock-paper-scissors thing going on with the blocks, attacks, and grabs. That makes sense.

I'll think about the jumping.

No adventure mode! That's just way too much work to be worth it.

Bonus points and traps sound good.

If you consider a day to be a long time to give updates, yes, it takes a long time to give updates.

But just so you know, I've got a lot of other projects to do before I can seriously consider this one. Making a full-blown ragdoll fighting game is a fairly huge task. Don't expect it for several months, at least. Maybe in the summer? Maybe in the fall?

The Least I can do Is give Ideas Right?


Stages:
1. Dance Dance -
  • A Flat Floor
  • Background is DDR (Dance Dance Revolution)
  • Strobe lights are flashing
2. A Castle -
  • Multiple floors
  • Lots of swords and axes
  • loads of destructable items
3. Trains -
  • You fight on a trains
  • 2 Trains actually
  • it may occasionally crash
  • if you kick your opponent off the train onto the floor, it's an instant KO
4. Bridge -
  • A bridge
  • pieces may fall off occasionally
  • If the entire bridge breaks, both players enter a new Area.
5. Under the bridge -
  • Nonselectable from the stage select mode
  • Cliffside

6. Airplanes -
  • Wind may blow you off
  • when kicked off, it's an instant KO
  • Enemy Airplanes will fly by
  • When That Happens, You must jump on the new Airplanes

Game Rules:
  • Darkness Mode - Everything is dark, You can't see anything but yourselves
  • Invisible Mode - You And your enemies are invisible
  • God Mode - Only Ringouts can kill you
  • Poison - you lose HP gradually
  • Regen Mode - You Heal gradually
  • InstaKill Mode - Any of your attacks can instantly Kill you, no Projectile attacks are possible, traps (Spikes) Cannot Instakill You
  • Throw Only Mode - You can only throw
  • Hardcore - Cannot see HP bar and Indicator, attacks do more damage
  • Counterblocks - Attacks will repel Blocks
  • Photoshoot Mode - When you pause, you can take pictures and videos of your epic moves

Certainly. I appreciate you sharing your ideas. I just don't want you to be disappointed because I'm not actively working on the project.

Anyway, I like those stage ideas so far. If you have any more, it would be great to hear them.

Ok.......
1. Rooftop - In NYC on rooftops, causes massive damage if you fall (things that causes you to have a deceleration effect will not work here). If you live the fall, cars will cause you to fly up (no damage)

2. CyberWorld/Matrix/Somewhere in the internet - A regular fighting map, until a helicoper drops bombs, then You see an underground organization called zion. Fire in the BG

3. Volcano - a volcano, Huge battlefield, many platforms, if you get kicked into lava, you will fly, damage is caused, Lava will rise, then you will be shot into a new arena.

4. Space - you fight in zero gravity, if you go twards earth enough, you will be affected by gravity, and you will fall (and die). There's lots of Rockets and astroids and meteors

5. Island - 2 Types available, after volcano mode, and before mode. After volcano mode, you'll ride volcano rocks downhill with lava surrounding the rock happens after the volcano erupts. Before mode, you will fight on the beach, lovley sunset and ocean in the bg, many trees, when knocked into trees, the tree will fall.

6. Dojo - A training area, only available in training mode, and unlocked in all modes after you finish tutorial mode. Many Weapons, and Pillars you can break.

7. Boat - On a Cruise Ship, Giant, more floors than a castle, when in the lowest floor, you must be careful. If you knock the enemy into the floor too many times, you will make a hole in the ship. You will drown if you are underwater too long. The ship will sink. you can swim and dive under water.

8. Spaceship battle - Same as space except you can drive spaceships

Also maybe mode / option / modificator / whatever ideas
1) Breakable limbs so if you hit a joint to hard it can move all the way without any limitations.

2) Cuttable limbs if you hit a limb with a sharp weapon (hey we don't want to rip someones arm of with a baseball bat do we?) it may gets cut of (if the hit was too weak _some_ blood or something xD)

Also for both an option how hard you must hit that the effect kicks in.

That would be awesome. Has to have breakable/deformable/rip-a-partable physics OR I AM NOT PLAYING.

So far this game has earned a: 8 1/2
