View Full Version : An IRC/ICQ Chat?

I realize a thread has already been made for this, but this is of a slightly different matter than an IRC channel, and I also felt it should deserve it's own thread (and a poll).

What I am talking about is a web-based ICQ chat for Fun-Motion. I have done it twice, and it was received well both times, but was forgotten about due to it's inevitable falling back into the other pages of posts and threads.

The last time I did this was about 3 or so days ago, and we had a great time. Whether or not everybody will, I do not know, but please do not vote no if you just don't like IRC, ICQ, or chat rooms. Vote for whether you think it should be done or not.

The reason I make this thread this time instead of the first is because it is now an actual web-based, excellent client, far superior to the one I had last time. Additionally, I was requested by a couple of people to sticky a link to the Chat room in the forum. Understanding this, I wanted to see everyone's opinion before I did so.

So vote, please on whether or not you think I should do this and if it is a good idea. Please also post why you voted the way you did. Thanks.

P.S - If you want to see the ICQ chat itself, go here (http://maltorgames.com/fmchat.html).

Erm, since when was someone working on an IRC client? IRC clients are things like mIRC, X-Chat, and the lot. IRC channel, maybe.

Also, that's not an IRC chat, that's ICQ chat. Not IRC, for the record.

And last but not least, I voted I don't care, because I don't. Not only that it wouldn't be used in my time-zone (like it isn't now), but if you're going to go get an IRC room, at least do something better. Our own IRC server, with a Java client on a page. Is that hard to do? No. Will people join it, even though it's a click away? No. Because it's a vicious circle. Everyone will join and see there's no-one and go "it's empty, I'm leaving", and the channel will ALWAYS be empty.

Thanks for clearing that up. Changing the title now. Thanks for your vote and opinion, too. Greatly appreciated. :)

Anyone else?

I think its a good idea because then people aren't restricted by the physics game rules and we don't have an off topic section yet. Its like a live forum.:)

I love me some IRC. It would be a great place to keep off-topic stuff, get a little hang-out time with the people from the boards. However, it would be imperative that people continued to use the boards to discuss games, game design, industry, tech, etc.

Yes although Ive only seen one other person in the chat (at the same time) I believe it will grow and become more and more used.

Voted yes.

I vote no unless it could somehow be integrated into the fun-motion site itself.

That's no problem. It's merely a matter of contacting Matthew, and having him put the HTML code and a link to it on here and the main site (if he wants), in the menu bars. Integration is no problem, is long as Matthew is willing to do it.

Is that all of the votes we're getting? If so, I guess Yes wins the popular vote, so the sticky will be made!

(Sorry for Double post)

Another option would be to use one of those Webbly chats or whatever they're called.

No. Hell no. Look at how the Datarealms forums ended because of the IRC chat.

I'm going to lock this, since the voting has ended. For Chat discussion, go to the Official thread in the Physics Games forum.
