Please do off-topic ;)

I really *don't* think that Off-Topic is necessary. There are plenty of other forums out there with that, and the danger is that if you make one, people will sign up only to spam OT, and not make any contribution to the boards.

Says who? You? How do you know? We need some OT, otherwise people will start making the ontopic forums into OT.

Slanzinger

Perhaps so, but Matt has himself stated that he'd be reluctant to put an OT forum in place:
Heh-hem:
Rule #1: Only Physics Discussion

For the time being there are no forum sections for general game discussion. Please keep discussion relevant to physics-based games, usage of physics in games in general, and other physics-related topics.

Besides, it's nice to have a slightly more focused forum around.

I'm a mod on a forum of 5000 users.

DO NOT, by any means, make an off topic forum.

We had people with 3 posts outside the forum, and upwards of 250 in the board.

We resorted to throwing up a privatization mod in, only people with 100+ posts can even see the board.

Why NOT make a board where you can thorow all the crap in? Off-Topic FTW!

Because, as you said yourself, all it would do is attract CRAP.

Keep these forums within Physics talk, offtopic would not be of any use.

Another way to do it, is to make a poll, and if the majority of the users want it, then maybe?

YES WE WANT IT DMAN IT!:p

OIFY anyone?

This place is turning into yet another Facepunch Jr., so I'm sure most of you know what I'm talking about...

jaybud4
02-28-2007, 03:16 AM
No. OIFY is... retarded. With Matthew onboard that will NOT happen.

OT is not needed, what is needed is general chat, nothing about physics. Or, I'm sorry. OT might be the same as General chat.

Actually, what would be needed more would be a General Game Discussion. Meaning where you can discuss games that aren't necessarily about games revolving AROUND physics...but normal games.

Oh, and I remember something a forum did. It implemented a points system, which gave everyone points when they posted, and every post in Off-Topic would be x amount of points. That would actually be pretty easy to implement.

Alternatively, you could do something like 2 posts a day for Off-Topic maximum...

VBulletin is very flexible...

Kurrus

Yeah, we need a general games section.

There should also be a Physics Apps section. :)

that could i agree with :D

I'm all for a physics app section, there are some really interesting programs out there relating to simulation and mathematics rather than gaming.

There should be an off-topic or any-topic board here. It increases the longevity of a board and makes you want to stay and post even when there's nothing to in physics or gaming to talk about.

Uh, I don't know if there is a FAQ for this,
but how (if possible) can I become a member of the forum?

If you were able to post that, you already are a member of the forum. :p

Those are User Titles. They get changed automatically at a number of posts if I recall correctly. Just keep posting *on-topic* and it'll change eventually...

Also, you should have a Questions forum. It'll save us the trouble of these kinds of questions.

Also, I'll write up a FAQ right now 'cause I don't have anything to do, and if Matthew wants, he can use it...

I guess you need to post over 30 times to get as a member
and 100 times to get as a senior member.

Coming back to the initial topic of this thread (should there be general discussion or not ?), I agree with Matt's decision: it's a physics/games forum, it's purpose is to keep the site alive between updates and relieve the news comments that grew larger.
If you want general discussion, find another forum on the web, there are plenty where you can talk useless nonsense all day long, or go on msn or whatever you like as IM, but please don't trash this nice and clean forum.

Thank you very much !

Well, I think we should have a General Discussion but not one thats too far away from the topic, but the existing forums are all about physics in games, what if we want to talk about say nationality and stuff?

CHEDDAR

agreed no off topic

I'll stick to Facepunch for my General Discussions. This board should be strictly physics talk. I've been looking around for a good physics games forum and, well, I've found one and I don't want it to go downhill.

:D

We don't need off-topic, it would only ruin this good physics forum.

Stigern
04-05-2007, 10:37 AM
The only thing we need, is "General Games" like games who has very little physics or none. Just so we can talk about them there.

SataMaxx
04-06-2007, 03:02 PM
Agreed with this. We have a physics game forum, which is spoiled by many threads on games-that-make-use-of-physics. We need a forum for games using physics which are not physics based games, and we also need a forum for physics toys/apps.

No off-topic. Chill out dude, PM them telling them to use the damn ICQ chat for off-topic, wich is exactly what it was made for.

GreyMario
10-25-2007, 06:51 PM
I'm going to attack (with logic) the person who said using IRC or ICQ for non-physics discussion was a good idea. How CAN it be a good idea? There's no support for the important things like threads and posts. Things that make a discussion area semi-permanent, not "gone when you leave".

See my reasoning? We can't have an IRC or ICQ chat as a replacement for a general-chat forum.

And I predict a thread close within thirty minutes of a mod seeing this thread.

Maltor124
10-25-2007, 08:21 PM
GreyMario, you sir, can predict the future. I read this at exactly 30 minutes after your post. o.O

And yes, this thread was necroed in the first place, as well, so lock. If you must, you can start a new thread to talk about this, though.
