Hi,
I've started working on this a week ago, currently the only thing I've got are Ragdolls and some animations, but I think it's time for some first demonstration videos:

Ok, I stopped this for a long time but I restarted development on it again. Here's a video showing the progress:

No missions yet and unfortunately I didn't manage to get sound working in the videos.
PS. Jump the first seconds of the video, VDub kept crashing so I didn't cut the vid.

Video wasn't working for me.
But, based off of the frozen parts of the video I couldn't play, it looks great.
It has this really clean feeling to it, which I like. Keep up the good work.

Funny the video didn't work for you. The first ten seconds there's only a grey screen, but thats because of the game that's loading there. Or maybe blip.tv was still generating the .flv while you were trying to watch it.

That's probably it. It works now, and looks fantastic. The only thing I would fix is the sniper rifle. The distance from the butt to the scope seems really long.

I realy like the Blood effects and the ragdolls,will there be a level editor?i would make some stairs and push a ragdoll or push the ragdoll of a huge building
anyway,will you give us beta versions or demos until the game is finished?

@GamerGuy99: I made the barret from a technical drawing. The distance looked pretty long to me also, but it's that long on the real barret too :P
The scope is modular btw, so u can decide where you want to put it ingame ;)
@killimanjaro23: Yes I'm currently thinking about a level editor. But probaply it's not going to be a "what you see is what you get" editor, as you'll probably know it from Age of Empires 3 or Crysis Sandbox, but one Editor to set the AI waypoints, another for placing buildings etc. This is just easier to make for me :)
Yes there will be a beta soon, with a hardcoded tiny mission I think. Just to let you guys play around with it.
I also made a small level where you can push down guys from a building already. It's pretty funny seeing them fall down screaming :D

That's pretty cool!
Nice work!
Although, you should maybe do something to the recoil of the sniper, you can't really see the damage you're doing to the stickmen untill they're lying on the ground.

Yes, that's a point I'll have try around with. There has to be some recoil, or it won't feel "realistic", but yes it's annoying not to see the damage instantly.

Maybe makes some blood splash outa the ragdolls neck?
What weapons will you have in the game?i hope shotguns are included :p,along with grenades and a melee weapon(AXE!)

There's already blood spraying out of the hole you shot through the ragdolls, the problem is, that the recoil thumps up the gun and you can't see it because you view gets up too ;)
I actually planned sniper rifles only, but it'll be probably modable anyway.

Or maybe it's just stupid? If you want people to play the game, this is not a smart thing to put in it
I read the controls because I'm not a retard so it usually aint to hard to find the playbutton.

Visual Studio Just-in-Time debugger popped up and said that an unhandeld win32 exception occurred. even though I uninstalled Visual Studio 3 days ago...

ya I could if I still had that debugger. I changed debugger to Dr. Watson, but he just crashes the program without warning. there's probably some weird "win32 exception", because that's what Visual studio JIT said.

Ah, not exactly, I just had to do much stuff for school and hadn't got the time to go on in development.
I'm gonna continue dev now as we got holidays :)

Feels like it has a lot of potential, but it is just way too buggy. On windows seven, black screen with some white noise then crash. Compatibility mode Windows XP SP3, constant crashes.

Are you saying that it has no potential because it doesn't work on your computer?
It's hard to program something that complex and have it work on all hardware and all versions of Windows at first.

My brother got Windows 7 2 days ago so I can check that out. Sounds like a problem with DirectX or something. Thanks for reporting. What do you mean with constant crashes btw? Is it working and then crashing or can't you even play?

Got an extra drive for christmas, and (dunno why) I can now play the game!
... So it WAS my extra drive crashing, woot!
You should definately make a respawn button, and maybe a button to add more stickmen? also, it would be cool to have a demo where you can push some dude of a rooftop! XD
btw, sometimes it seems like I did a perfect headshot, and it didn't count. explanation please?
also, that red dot that appears after you shoot, why isn't is showing up all the time? it would really help out aiming. maybe it could be turn-off-able, and the sticks could see it and run away? lol
anyway, I hope you continue developing!

You can push down a man in the demo already. He's standing right on the roof you are on, but he jumps as soon as you shoot, cause he's panicing. You're right of course, a restart button's missing.
The red dot that appears is the bullet, not an aiming help, I know it's not really fitting in.
If the men are running around you have to calculate that the bullet's speed is not infinite, so you'll have to shoot in front of the men.

Update:
I actually planned to send a video of this again but capturing somehow lags on Windows 7 for some reason so I'll post this screen until I got it working:

There's a lot of new stuff:
- Glow effects on cars, windows, lights etc.
- Realtime Cubemapped reflections
- Animated Blood splashes (Blood sliding down walls etc.)
- Day/Night change
- Lot's of bugs fixed
- Menu added
I'm still not quite finished with the AI and the first mission, so you still have to wait for the next release a bit. Not sure when it'll be ready but it's gonna be in about the next few weeks.

This reminds me of a game idea I had. It was called "free 2 kill". Shut up.
You basically could go around doing anything--but most of the game design time was spent working on adding new interactions. Want to attach an IED to a curb and launch a car into a building? I guess we could do that.

Well, I'm still here and the last weeks were pretty stressful. I must admit, that I somehow forgot about this one. I looked in the code again and recognized that there are many things done wrong. I've got three options now: Firstly I could just give up and declare this one dead officialy. Secondly, I could try to make the best out of what I've done so far. And Thirdly I could throw away the code and start again.
I actually think that option 3 is the best. I just learn with everyday I'm coding and I'm sure I can do better that I did in the code of G.R.E.Y.
Don't expect updates in near time, I'm gonna write my last test this month in a few days, but I don't know if I'm gonna have much more time after it.
Still, I'm happy that you're interested in this game. I hope this will motivate me enough to go on and finish this one, cause to be honest, I never managed to finish a game yet apart from some really small ones.

(Somehow I missed the update)
The demo is really quite fun.
I think if you simply polish it up, you can make it a presentable game.
All I really need to have to be content would be a crouch button for added stability, a quarry system (telling you who to kill), and possibly an ammo system (restrains the ability to spam bullets).

I like the rooftop idea.
Perhaps you could start at the sidewalk, allowing access to the building.
It might be fun if you could choose the floor you're at.

The movement seems pretty slow and needs some polishment. And it would be cool if you could zoom in a little more so you can actually hit those stickmen.
And please make the stickmen calm down after a while because after just some minutes I had a really big traffic jam with people running around and cars flying through the sky :D

After several hours of just sitting in my room thinking I made a decision now. I'll start G.R.E.Y. from scratch and it will use the Unreal Engine 3. No it won't be a mod, but a standalone game using UDK.
I decided not to use my own "game engine" as I would need my own Level-Editor, Scripting interpreter etc. and that would simply cost much time.

We are using BlitzMax+Blide for programming, Xors3d (DirectX 9, good engine with even better developers!) for graphics, Nvidia Physx as physics engine and some selfmade tools.
Btw. our semester break started this weak, so we'll be able to invest more time in development now.
We actually pulled off quite much in the meantime, though there is not too much to show in a video or something. It's more the kind of backend stuff, like basic AI behaivior, weapon- and scripting mechanics. All this is finished or at least near finished. We now have to focus on actual level design and as soon as we've got our first real level running, you'll be first to know.
