I thought it will be cool if we make a list of all of the great physics games from about 1995 to present and we will vote on which was the best physics wise.

Here is my quick list;
2000 Perfect Dark (N64) - The beginning of console game rag dolls
http://au.gamespot.com/n64/action/perfectdark/index.html?q=Perfect%20Dark&tag=result;title;1

2001 Halo (XBOX) - Realistic vehicle physics and animations bumped this games amount of enjoyment. Plus a great single and multi player to top it off.

Cant remember any for 2002 and 2003

2004 Half Life 2 - Great ragdolls and a good sense of immersion when lots of the scenery is also destructible.

2005 Flat Out I (PC) - One of the best vehicle deformations at the time plus a very dynamic vehicular handling adding a dynamic twist to the game.

2006 -
Motor storm (PS3) - The worlds most dynamic and realistic deformations are inside MotorStorm. One crash = 50+ part bounces around the track.

-Gears of War (X360) - Corpse deformations + cinematic physics = One of the best physics integrated in a console game ever.

2007 (estimate) Crysis
CellFactor: Revolution
FlatOut: Ultimate Carnage
Cortex Command
Barrel

Note: All shareware and freeware games are included.

If we're talking about best physics games, I wouldn't add Halo and GeoW (GoW= god of war ;D) to that list.
1998: 1nsane
2004: Half life 2
2007: It will be LBP :D

Not very big list

Wasn't Hitman the first with ragdoll physics? The ragdoll effects in hitman sucked, and they were the first ones i've seen..(correct me)

well... Was Psi-Ops the first game with physics-based telekinesis? Maybe that might be good for the list....Burnout has some cool vehicle deformation too. The first RTS that has some real physics that i can think of must be Company of Heroes..

They were pretty much the first. And I actually thought they were the best implimented for quite a few years after, too.

which hitman do you mean, ive got hitman contracts and the ragdoll physics is quite good. and if perfect dark has ragdolls then the nintendo ds should have ragdolls because i think the ds is nearly as powerful as the n64

1999: Carmageddon II: Carpocalypse Now
..Still way ahead of any car racing game ever made because of amazing car deformatations and a superb physics all-round

As far as i'm concerned, that is the best physics game EVER... until nex-gen games really start fufilling thier potential (PS3 Especailly)

I think you need DOS? Correct me if I'm wrong, but I couldn't run it either because of a DOS error. </offtopic>

Also, the first RTS to have really good and accurate physics was by FAR Faces of War. It still has the best physics today. It might have done better than Company of Heroes (best game EVAR) if it hasn't been so tedious to play. Google it, YouTube, or something. Or play the demo, and you'll see what I mean.

Very few of the games mentioned are "physics games", strictly speaking. They're mostly games with some physics elements in them, and ragdolls are hardly impressive now. ;) But then again, there isn't an impressive number of proper physics games right now.

I'd love a full-featured game involving all the fundamental branches of Physics, with mechanics, thermodynamics, optics, electricity and waves, but that's a far off dream.

GeOW is worth mentioning because shooting an enemy is just plain fun, just like Cortex Command. Oops, sorry forgotten to include that in my list.

Garrysmod 10 FOR Half-life2, 2007, best Physics-based game to date. With the incredible in-depth amount of physics embedded within garrysmod, nothing can compete. Some games have simple ragdoll or rigid body physics, and you see them a bit, but with gmod10 you don't just see and touch the physics, you create with it; you create with the physics. In my opinion, that is the ultimate physics environment- and Garrysmod 10 is the best Physics Game of the Year.

And by the way.. CF:R is out.. so it should technically be listed under 2007, instead of estimated 2007..

I never played Faces of War, but i googled it. Turns out, it's a sequel to Soldiers: Heroes of WW2, which also has some pretty cool physics. And the direct-control system is awesome!

And Cortex Command is such a great game that I think it should be somewhere on the list too...

What about freeware and open-source games? I think there should be a separate section for commercial games and free games (as free games are obviously on a lower budget).

Anyway, I vote for The Incredible Machine.

Plus, could you make a thread just for voting and one for recommending.

Ok, now I'm a big fan of Perfect Dark, but I don't see how (in your right mind), you could possibly claim it had "ragdoll physics". They we're just animations! After playing Half-Life 2, I was horrified when in PD, I would shoot someone and they would fly half way through a wall. It had physics with the scooter, anti gravity pad and pushing couches around in the institute, but that was about it. True, you could shoot someones head and it would fly back, but that was just an animation.

I liked the Halo series, Half-Life 2 and Garry's Mod 10. Those were all major achievements in incorporating advanced physics in casual gaming.

Yes I know that CF:R is already out but Crysis, Warmonger and Cortex Command are not.

Get the 3DFX carma 2 wrapper, lets you play in high resolutions and stuff, works fine here :)

I'm sorry to be mean, but... You friggin' dopes! The first game with ragdoll physics was Jurrassic Park:Tresspasser. Holy hell, don't speak of that which you know not of.

Anyways, I've gotta vote for Cortex Command. Are there any other games like it?

I think Beakless mentioned Jurassic Park: Trespasser in another thread, it just was never mentioned here, I guess.

And we are voting on released games. Cortex Command, as completely awesome as it undeniably is, is not released.

Cortex Command is very cool....but it's unfinished and I wouldn't vote for it in it's state. Maybe later on in development I would but not now.

EDIT: 400th post. That's a coincidence...

I got the 100 posts in a week :D but it's unnoticeable in the forums huh.

Quickly going back on topic, because I wouldn't vote for cortex command I would replace with FlatOut: Ultimate Carnage.

I would also add Faces of War, as it was the first RTS to have a complete use of physics for a strategic purpose, not just for polish.

Ok then. In that case, I will have to go for... Hmm well I can't play anything that requires computing power, sooo... from my experience, the next best thing would be Soldat.

ahh, one I haven't seen about before and judging by the media stuff it's like battlefield 1942 in RTS mode.
I shall put this on my wish list.

Why put faces of war there when there's company of heroes?! COH has ragdoll, rigid body physics AND destructable scenery. And yes I did mention Jurassic Park: Trestpasser befoure. (again can't spell trestpasser...)

Because Faces of War has destructible scenery, BULLET PATHS, (im not sure is FoW has ragdoll, but...) anyhow, CoH is fun, i give you that, but FoW has a much better use of physics.

Agreed, Faces of War had actual complete destruction of environments. Company of Heroes had preset destruction based on where you hit, in Faces of War pieces (as in like, chunks of bricks, not the roof) of the building fly off with every hit, and the building will eventually collapse if it has too little of it's lower floor remaining. Faces of War did have ragdoll, as well, and a much more sophisticated cover system in it. Unfortunately, as good as Faces of War's physics were, it much, more tedious to play than CoH (and the micromanagement of CoH is still pushing it, but in FoW it's multiplied by ten), and in my opinion made it far less fun than it could have been.
