Hello, Cheddar (?)

Are you saying that in war games, all deaths should be handled by ragdolls rather than pre-made animations? Because after months of my crap-o-decryptor at work, that's what it's come out with.
lassenissen
05-13-2007, 11:36 AM
I think so too, because if the death of a character is animated it can get really stupid annoying situations. Say a characters death is to fall backwards and land on his back, if he stands on the brink of a cliff and he dies he will either 1. Lay with most of his, if not the entire body in mid air. or 2. his body will fal down but laying completely still in the air as he falls.
So yes, ragdoll deaths should be intigrated in every game...

i think that we physics fans are taking over the world of gaming because they seem to be scraping scripted deaths in all shooters and nearly all games are having some sort of physics in them
CX1329
05-13-2007, 05:29 PM
I just wish we could have some more actual physics, like kinematics, dynamics, electromagnetism, thermodynamics...all we ever get seems to be ragdolls.

I think like a physics based pain skin like in sof 2 so if you use a 45. and shoot some commie in the face liquid blood would spray out and a piece of his face is gone

Yeah, I was somewhat disappointed with the deaths in TP. Ragdolls + Zelda would = heaven!

I prefer the combination of scripted death and ragdoll. Like it starts off as an animation, then about halfway through it turns into a ragdoll. I think these always look best.

Ragdolls can look a tad artificial, I think, but scripted animations are horrible. I liked the ragdolls in that Meqon demo, they reacted pretty well to the kinetic energy inflicted upon them, and didn't look all soft.
However, when trying to imitate a real human, bodies should never fly when being shot, as we all know that even at point blank range, a shotgun blast to someone would never cause them to jump back.

I'd rather have my physics engines be slightly unrealistic but more cinematic, wouldn't you? It wouldn't be that fun to play a game where people didn't get knocked back from gunfire... No blasting ragdolls into people's faces.
On another note, does anyone know if The Matrix: Path of Neo had ragdoll? I can't remember any crappy scripted deaths, and I want a Matrix physics game, so...

No, the ragdolls in Halo 2 sucked.
More like Fight Night Round 3. I can't think of any shooters that act like this but I know that I've played one...I just can't remember what it was.

What I hate more than questionable threads are the stupid responses that come from the community.
Jeeze.
I think there should be at least a bit of scripting when it comes to ragdolls. I don't like how in some games the person just flops to the ground. You still have rudimentary control and stability, even if your legs have been blown off.
To sum up, I don't think the word "ragdoll" should be taken literally.

We kinda got over the fact that this thread was spam a while ago, deal with it.
Anyways, the ragdolls in Halo 2 I didn't think really sucked. They are in inflexible 1000lbs armor! Have much would you move around after you die in that, and how flexible would your movements be?
Also, I would love a game where you actually have bodies piling up on each other. There are many parts of Call of Duty 3 where you are fighting off hundreds of enemies, and many of your men are dying. This, in real life would be filling up these trenches with dead bodies, but the ragdolls don't collide! So instead you have 20 guys overlapping each other, instead of having run through your dead piles of comrades. That would be crazy, and really signify the way trench warfare was, if you were defending, at lest.

This thread just needs to die. I'm becoming to think that Lee Buslett is the guy who spammed threads and created stupid ideas and everyone bashed him, whose name is Justin1221. Remember that ass? He hasn't posted in a while, probably wanted to get the bad rep off him so he created a new account. They both seem similar..
Maltor124
05-20-2007, 12:54 AM
Possibly. I doubt it, though. I'm pretty sure Lee was around before Justin1221 stopped posting, but I'm not sure. They do seem slightly similar, but this Lee is much...odder than Justin was. Of course, if Justin is trying to clear his name, then obviously he would try to make this Lee seem worse. Although people are still going to remember him, even if everyone hates Lee, so I don't see how this would work...

Try Rainbow Six Vegas. Thats got some good ragdoll in and they pile up if they fall on top of each other.
Yes no clipping!!!

I have Rainbow Six Vegas. Great game, that, but it's not really what I'm looking for. Being an Anti-Terrorist game, you aren't really facing too many enemies at, and you never really have to hold a position against an onslaught (specifically not in a trench, building, etc.) of enemies, a la Call of Duty 3.
I just hope Call of Duty 4, although it may be modern war (it looks insanely awesome.), will have no clipping, and still some position holding. *Crosses Fingers*
