Did you guys know that Vertigo Climbing game isn't the only game Wildebeest Games (http://www.wildebeestgames.com/) is making or has made. I searched the forums and didn't find anything about them or their other games and I think they deserve some attention. Check out there site (http://www.wildebeestgames.com/)

Vertigo
A physics based climbing game featuring 'powered ragdoll physics' so no canned animations. Your climber stretches and twists at your command to reach the holds you have selected with the result that each climb will be a truly unique experience. With tiring limbs and a variety of hold types, mental agility is just as important as brute strength and physical technique. Fully implemented rope system (if selected by the player) allowing for realistic belaying and limb tangling possibilities! A variety of environments, indoors, outdoors, man-made or natural, there will be routes to suit all tastes and abilities.

Howdy doody,
Sorry for not taking part for so long - my HDD died and to cut a long story short I've wound up with a new PC - persuading the bank manager took a little while so I've been out of circulation for a bit.
Yeah - it has to be said my site is not exactly updated 'often' however I'd like to just clarify a few things :-
- I do occasionally finish stuff - the Tricky Tracks and Simsail games were completed and sold a couple of years back as an example.
- The other little videos are of stuff I was just messing with (kaboom for example) I have a HDD full of half finished projects - there's only so many hours in a day- and some stuff is just, well, crap, whilst other stuff is better.
- On the Vertigo front my negotiations with some prospective sponsors for the game, kit manufacturers and the like, are looking promising, so I'm hoping to have a (branded) demo out soon (yeah right) honestly.
The you-tube stuff :-
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tT3KTdvBAGA
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qJVYpQAjgzc
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VPhREBBc-Mw
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5nGMD4Fc4wk
- I'm also working on a sequel to Tricky Tracks called Wacky Wheels (original I know) it has ghost cars and better track segments and particles and stuff - it should be better all round.
@ Farbror Fazer : Yeah I get what you're saying, but TT was never intended to be like Trackmania (TT came first anyways) its supposed to be more skill orientated than flat out speed.
- Finally - you might like to know that I wrote a sequel to Simsail called 'X-Sail'. This was for a mate who manufactures and sells land yachts and you can d/l the game which is totally free at http:\\www.x-sailgame.com (http://www.x-sailgame.com).

oh - to keep things tidy - perhaps I should update progress on Vertigo in this thread ? Mods- if you want to lock the other thread maybe ? - I dunno - just a thought.

Hi Guys, Just got an email from mark judd who I email asking him to update this thread. This is what he said.
Hi,
Cheers for your mail.
Vertigo development has been slow just recently due to a couple of issues
over in-game sponsor equipment. I'm hoping to have most of the details
tidied up this coming weekend after a couple of meetings and will update the
fun-motion thread next week when I have some definate news.
I'm spending my free time whilst waiting working on my demolition game
'kaboom' which I'm looking to get a demo out of in the next few days.
Thanks for taking an interest,
cheers,
Mark

I've just uploaded a quick 'compatibility test' if you fancy a try.
You'll need a decent PC with reasonable card to get the best out of the game though.
Download it here (6.5Mb ZIP file) :-
http://www.wildebeestgames.com/kaboom/kaboomcompatibilitytest.zip
Unzip to a folder of your choosing, take care to keep folder structure intact.
Since this is just a test to see how the game runs, there is no building creator, and you cannot modify the position of the charges in this demo.
During gameplay, if you press and hold 'i' you'll get some debug info - if you have time i'd appreciate some feedback on pc specs. and what spare ms you're getting.
Many thanks,
cheers,
Mark

AWEOSME!!!! I can't wait to try this, even though you can barely do anything with it!
Hopefully this will hold my excitement for a while! :P
EDIT: Is there supposed to be a frame limit at 24fps? Because that is all I'm getting at all times.
Wildebeest
07-06-2009, 04:15 PM
Yes thats right - its locked to approx. 25fps (i.e a maximum of 40ms per frame).
If you hold the 'i' key down it'll tell you how many spare ms you have out of the 40 allowed (the higher the better).
EDIT : I should explain - the physics engine will adjust according to how hard its being worked - if the figure is >0 then all is good.
If its >3 most of the time, the pc is easily coping with the work - if its 1 or 0 most of the time - its not going so well !
As long as the spare ms is >0 the graphics engine will maintain a fixed frame rate of 25fps.
cheers,
Mark

I have a 9800GT, Intel Core 2 Duo processor at 3.4ghz, 4GB of RAM, and I am getting around 10-15 spare ms (10 only when the building was collapsing), and while I was holding down "i" and playing at the same time, it crashed. (just letting you know)

Yeah, quite a few people probably won't get spare ms, so there will have to be some graphical settings he will need to put in eventually, but now, it's just a stability test, he's making sure that it works on a lot of different systems.

Works fine on my XP athlon x2 rig 8400 gpu
Had it running on Windows 7 as well at home.
Messing with the power of the explosives and camera angles is fun .
Good stress relief at work for me.
As with all things it will be done when its done, thats when i stop unplugging his keyboard from his pc.

How is that smart? He makes absolutely no money that way. You just don't get how economics works. The fact of the matter is that he probably needs money, and devoting months of time to something that creates absolutely no income is going to be counterproductive. This game was made with a commercial mindset. Had it been developed simply as a free game then there would be no fallback.
I think the dev is a little bit too... Well, let's just say silly. He's gone about this the wrong way. One tech preview, no news for months, then blam! shitty game.

This is no different than the tech previews. You can still throw the balls around (sounds slightly pornographic doesn't it). The only difference is that you can now place explosives.
I don't understand. Everyone went crazy over the tech demo, ready to eat out of the Dev's hands and now he releases essentially the same demo, just with a few changes and everyone instantly claims the game is shit and bash it to the fervor of the L4D2 boycott group or the MW2 community. Give it a chance, obviously everyone did the first time, what's the difference now?
Rant mode disengaged.

Hi,
Just wanted to clear a few things up.
Firstly, sorry for the lack of communication, it's not my strong point (to say the least) so apologies if you got out of shape over not hearing anything.
It's something I'm looking to address in the near future.
A blog or something I guess.
Secondly I'm at a loss as to why the tech demo is seen as being better than the detonate demo, they are the same game - if anything the changes to the code should just improve the fps, etc ?
Thirdly, I have more or less run out of time on this project. I only have so much time available and it's become apparent that to implement everything I had intended to would take at my work rate - well - lets just say next year would be a fair bet.
So I have tidied up what I have, and rather than keep people waiting for ever, figured I would just release it.
In summary - the full version is essentially what you see in the demo, except you can make your own structures.
If you feel like putting a little cash my way in a day or so then thanks very much - it will help towards getting some of my other projects finished and published - if not, then fair enough.
cheers,
Mark

When you're new to a forum, you normally don't start upsetting people. Well I don't want to do that either, however, I have been reading the posts on Kaboom, which later became Detonate. A change of name, some graphics and actual optimization doesn't sound that bad. Fair enough when the tech demo appeared everyone went nuts. It's in our human nature to make things only to watch them fall apart or rather destroying them with a big bang. This game seemed to come up with that OH so sweet relief of stress by blowing the crap out of buildings. Now, I've played the tech demo and now the "official" demo. It doesn't seem like much of a change to me. Sure, the explosions and the textures look better (as best as they can on the engine) but in essence it feels the same. So if anyone can give a more solid statement of why in Jeebus's name is the game shit now, please, do tell.
From my part, hats off to the dev. Dude, congrats on the project, for sticking to it and for almost delivering. I will most definitely support you and buy the game. For everybody else, Cheers!

The way you place the explosives and the way it handles when you are trying to make something blow up. it just doesnt feel right, the amont of menu's you have to go through just to get to the ability to place a charge and then blow it up.. flyboy if i got it right, say so. or just say whatever you want :3

Now, I will most likely be buying this game, this guy seems nice, and he deserves it, when do you see a game with destruction like this, being able to create the awesome destructable things, AND get to place explosives?! Wow, and only $8.07?!?!?! That is an awesome deal! :)

After playing around with Detonate a few hours now, I must say: It is really great fun, but could be so much better with a few minor tweaks:
-There should be a hotkey for going a level up and down in "Create"-mode, it woud speed up building a lot. If you are building a skyscraper you could just press the hotkey and click your mouse in alternation to create a "pile" very fast. Would be easy to implement and would just speed everything up.
-Speeding up the building process... not a minor tweak but really (pretty please ;)) needed: copy&paste. It would make building so much faster and you could concentrate on building instead laying floor tiles for half an hour...
-Why does the bomb laying menu change size with distance to the bomb? If you're to far away it's to small and if you are inside a building laying bombs in narrow corridors it's so big you can't handle it very well. You get used to it, but if it's an easy on/off switch switch it off, please.
Last but not least: Why does Esc escape to main menu without asking? - I somehow always try to reset a house by pressing Esc... it just seems the right thing to do, and I always end up in main menu. :o
That said: It's really worth the money, it's great fun and I hope we will get some house-sharing started here on fun-motion

I'd still like a patch for the whole two many pieces crashes...
It kind of ruined it for me - the editor isn't something you can make a nice building within 5 minutes, it will take a lot of time - and having finally finished a building just to discover that the skybridge that links your two towers is the element that is too much for the game to handle is pretty frustrating...

Sorry for the bump, but wanted to let folk know I have added a different payment option on my site for those having problems with Digital River.
Working on a detonate building pack to be released before Christmas (free of course) for use with the full version of the game.
cheers,
Mark

I've made a few buildings for detonate. My entire "buildings"-folder is just 23K when zipped, so I'm just putting up the entire folder.

I just bought this game after finding the demo online and I must say, WOW!!
I never thought it would be this fun, so simple.

Howdy,
Thought you might like to know, I've uploaded some instructions on how to make your own custom textures and wall strength definitions in the detonate game.
If you go to the Wildebeest Games website, there's a link to a zip file containing the instructions and a couple of files you need - it's at the bottom of the detonate page.
cheers,
Mark

Hello again,
I've just given the Tricky Tracks game an overhaul, now includes replays, ghost cars and some other stuff.
http://www.wildebeestgames.com/trickytracks.htm
Its all about precision and finesse rather than all out speed, so if you're heavy handed with the throttle you'll struggle to complete a stage.
It can be tough negotiating off-camber balance beams and see-saws and so on.
You can also set your car up fairly comprehensively, ride height, spring strength, brake balance and gear ratios can all be adjusted.
If you get a minute, try the demo out and let me know what you think (it includes the full track editor and replay system).
Right, on with Vertigo !
cheers,
Mark
Great, cant wait to see vertigo!

Will Vertigo be free?

"Will vertigo be free ?"
Sorry - but no.
I am working on putting vertigo up as the same price as for Detonate and Tricky Tracks i.e. 5 Euros.
Unless it takes me so long to finish, PC's no longer run Windows, in which case it will be free, 'cos I'll be broke :)

I get $12 every week, And manage to save upto $2 every time the week ends. In four weeks I could have gotten $8 or more if I really cared for something I want to buy. Im getting a summer job just for fun with my other batch mates. :/ 1 more month and McDonalds time! :P

You're starting to make me feel wealthy !
Vertigo is not going to be out until the summer being realistic, so you should have plenty of chance to save up.
I have tried to make the price for the games fair, I know it doesn't stop people from copying them, I understand that, but I have a family to support as well !
(OK break out the violins).
Vertigo is progressing, I've rewritten some core elements to allow for multiple routes at any given location, so the way the levels were loaded have had to be adjusted.
Save games and replays are also linked to a particular climb so they needed adjusting.
This means that you can have a good climbing site (like a quarry or mountain side) where the model for the game only has to be loaded once, but there can be multiple routes available.
Will try to update the blog later with some more detail on what I'm actually doing.
cheers,
Mark

Fair might be the understatement of the year, if someone isn't going to buy it for 5€ he won't buy it for 2 cents.
I can see how teenagers start pirating mainstream titles that cost 60++€ but that's not the point here...
Can you really live from it? I thought you were doing it as a weekend project.
I read the numbers chronic logic published and was pretty amazed by the detailed financial information and i was astonished how much income they had (spread over years and developers, of course made it less impressive but none the less...)
But Chronic Logic for example are pretty "big" and quite well known in some circles, while (I hate to say that) I heard of wildebeestgames here...
Are you actively promoting your games on some indie game sites and I was just sleeping or are you somewhat okay with word of mouth propaganda?
Whatever: I'm really looking forward to Vertigo! Keep it up

I have a dayjob, but to say it's low paid would be the understatement of the year. I'm at a bit of a tipping point where the income from the couple of games i have up on the site is getting close to being able to feed me.
I have to judge when to 'jump' - quitting the day job and devoting all my time to coding.
I definitely think he should make his website look more "professional".
Fair comment, but do I spend time and energy (and possibly money) on making the site look slick or just ensure that people can find what they're looking for ?
There must be a trade off between money spent on a site and the potential for losing orders when people see it and go 'sheesh it looks crap - i'm not giving them any cash'.
I seriously appreciate the feedback though (honestly!)

Yes I understand that but I am sure you could atleast find a nicer looking template online for free. I mean you could be making more money in the long run if the website looked more "trust worthy". But idunno you do whatever and just make us them games :D

By losing it i mean if i accidentally delete, or i have to reinstall windows because of virus, is it possible to redownload somehow.
also, it would be cool if this game had a site to upload own buildings and for others to download.
