View Full Version : Physics Games/Demos for Vista?

Hey all, I just got a 320GB new hard drive a few days ago, only to realize that my computer could hold only one hard drive. So now I'm being forced to use this new hard drive, and since my computer only had integrated XP, we have no way to install a new version of Windows XP on my new hard drive. So in a few days I'm getting Vista instead since XP IS considered "obsolete" now...
Anways, I was wondering, anyone have any ideas about the compatibility of these games/tech demos out there for Vista? If not, anyone have any good tech demos/games that they know are coming out in the future for Vista (or are compatible with it)?

Don't buy Vista...
YET.
Wait until the DX10-compatible drivers are released and some games use them.

Nzzz nzzz nzzz nzzz...
I think what ghandi was trying to say was, don't buy new operating systems until software starts telling you that you need the new operating system to run.

My buddy ordered a new laptop with Vista installed. I tried to change his mind, it's too early yet, but no luck... The good thing is that i'll have a chance to experiment with the first "full of incombatibilities" versions of WinVista without risking my money :p

Don't forget that Halo 2 is on vista...

Vista has 3D chess. You can tip the board over and the glass pieces shatter procedurally on the concrete of the park footwalk.
It's pretty fun.

OMG I want vista :)
BUT, look at this (Sorry, it's in finnish :p ) http://plaza.fi/muropaketti/directx-10-windows-xpssa
A little translate: Cody Brocious has made some kind of a library that can run DX10... eh stuff (GAMES!!!11!!1  ) on windows XP. So you can play DirectX10 games on Xp, although it IS risky :)
(Sorry MS-fans, but I have to say this) Haha, IN YOUR FACE MICROSOFT =D

You don't need to worry Mate!
I got Vista Home Premuim (the best unless you work at a company or something) since over a month and the only thing that hasn't worked was Jade Empire (but it was a download so it's possible it isn't Vistas Fault).
So the gaming front is pretty good, but i don't know much about physics demos and stuff, but it should work...

Only problem with Vist as I have experienced is VLC, and custom resolution in the nVidia drivers.
It's pretty much useless atm, wait until some DX10 games comes.
I'm converting to Vista when SP1 is released. :)

Thanks for all of the replies (negative, too...I guess)! I read an article this morning doing a compatibility test on many recent titles, some of them pretty huge.. and all of them were compatible, aside from Call of Duty 2, but I have 3 for the Xbox 360. ( :D ) So I'm not really worried about commercial games, so much as I am start up, independently developed games, such as Sumotori!. Anyone have any ideas on those, as in do Vista and XP share many of the libraries and such that these programs use, or will they be reduced to complete garbage from incompatibility?
P.S.- To those who have said "Don't get Vista!", too late. I already bought it, as I stated in my first post. I was just wondering what people knew about these games working.
Random sentence I decided to put after the P.S.- In terms of tech demos, I'm talking strictly about great little things (such as the soft-body demos by Alec Rivers), physics engine capability demonstrations (Novodex Rocket and the like), and Physics SDK's (such as Ageia's).
Thanks again for the replies.

Get Vista, Report Bugs simple...
If everyone is like "ZOMG I WONT GET THAT, ITS A TOO BUGGY"
Then no bugs will get reported and Service Pack 1 will still be just as buggy...

Well yeah, it's good when people report bugs, but I think not many have time or just don't want to report them. I dunno. Well... Atleast i'm not buying Vista 'til the major bugs have been repaired. :D

The bugs report themselves now, you just gotta press Send.
I've already found three, all driver based

I don't need vista, for I have Madotate. Hooray! And anyways, I don't see the big deal, you can run office vista on a windows XP machine (compatability mode) plus i've patched most of the games that come with vista to work on XP. (they're nothing special)

A lot of commercial games will still let you run them on Windows 98, so I'm not worried. :p

Ok you are going to get gang bashed by Nerds...
Its buggy because of incoimpatibilities with different software and hardware... guess what... it impossible to test all the combinations of these in a lab environment thats why they bought out the Beta's... Guess what
there's millions of combinations of hardware alone, theres always going to be bugs. Now you can go back to your Mac...

Back on topic ^^:
All the dark basic (I think it is dark basic, but I am pretty sure it is) won't run on windows vista for some reason. Does anyone have some idea, why it doesn't run?

Vista came out a few months ago. It's bound to have bugs.
Remember how everyone thought XP was shitty when it came out? Look at it now. Everyone loves it. No problems. But it did have all sorts of problems when it was released until MS saved the day with the patches and service packs.
Every OS comes with bugs, Vista is no different. I guess everyone hates change. :/

I've had vista for a while now, and at first there were many many problems. For example, I had to get software to emulate an ati video card because Dawn of War didnt like my OS videoCard driver combination (i have geforce7950)
However Nvidia released new drivers tailored for vista only a few weeks ago and since I downloaded those, all my problems went away. It's all in the drivers. Otherwise, you'll need a ton of RAM and decent video and processors, but otherwise vista is just fine.
