I'm looking for some beta testers for my game Diver (http://www.physicspoweredgames.com/Games/Diver/Diver.aspx)
Diver is feature complete for the most part. I'm just looking for some of you to kick the tires and give feedback on any bugs, confusing navigation, or anything else that seems messed up.
Particularly I'm looking for feedback on the new tutorials levels.
Please only respond in this thread with beta related feedback. If you have general comments about the game you can use the primary Diver thread (http://www.fun-motion.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1623)

Er....
you're using an iFrame to link to a website with the game?
You iFramed it wrong. "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage." that's what it says in the iFrame.
JeffWeber

Are others having this problem?
The Iframe is there because the game is served up from a Silverlight Streaming service.
I can't re-create the issue on my machine. Do you know if you have the Silveright 2.0 plug-in? It should have prompted you to install it. Not sure why it did not.
I'll keep digging into it. Sorry about that.

VERY hard, even on the first or second level, but still pretty fun. Only thing though, it;s VERY hard to actually perform a succesful backflip!
The tutorial was very nice.

It's... BEAUTIFUL! lol. Really great update. I love hitting his head and making him ragdoll :3. Highest passing scores anyone? So far mine is 9.7 on 1-5 and 1-7.
E: passed a level after going ragdoll (1-10) and failed a dive with a ten. I could do this all day :3
EA: On 1-11 I got into the "square" place, the second one after the crack to the buoys. Once I got there and landed on my feet (Gymnast rar) And once I ragdolled into it and made it look like I was sleeping while sitting/smoking.
EAA: I landed on the black square right under the spawn in 1-11 and then sorta exploded... Not really, but I was sent flying up and landed in the empty space to the left.
EAAA: Repeated the ragdoll to empty space, but one space to the left.
EAAAA: Now did the explode AND the ragdoll to sitting. This map is really cool :D

Yeah, this is easily the most common comment I get. I just can't really make it any easier without comprimising the control scheme.
The back flips get easier as you learn.
Let me know if you run accross any bugs or simple things you think could be fixed/changed to make the game better.

He should be able to jump of the cliff pretty much the same in every level. It requires being consistent in the mouse movement.
The diving boards in the later levels vary in strength, though.

Brilliant, Everything feels much smaller this time for some reason, has the view zoomed out a bit or something? If you want to do backflips easier, move your mouse slowly to the right and down, then bring it back towards the left in a kind of sweeping movement which completes the figure of 8 style shape you've just done.... (i've confused you more, sorry :p)
Found a kind of glitch, on dive 1-4, if you dive and don't clear the cliffs below, and make a jumping movement so that your feet impact the cliff you go flying quite far.
E: I find the gameplay area far too small on my monitor - I tend to move my mouse from the gameplay area and end up ruining many dives, especially at the beginning when you are jumping... Monitor resolution: 1280x1024
E: You can still pass a level, even whilst in ragdoll.
Hope that helps, brilliant game Jeff, cheers :)

Thanks for the feedback. The game is maybe a bit smaller than the previous alpha. I have been toying with the scale. I'll consider making it larger or letting the user choose a size.
I may or may not looking into the "flying far thing". It doesn't happen to often, and it's kind of fun when it does. I'll think about it.
Yes, you can pass a level when you have gone limp. I decided I liked it that way. It's kind of a luck factor. If you can bounce your ass all over the map, then land a decent score you deserve to pass. :-)
Thanks again for the feedback and keep it coming.

Yeah, I know that "sitting/smoking" look. I'm still finding new, funny things happening.
Not sure you noticed but you can reset any level at anytime by just clicking the screen anywhere.

A Question For You All.
Has the game been remembering what levels you've passed. You should be able to leave the game and come back and it will remember where you left off.
If it is resetting your passed levels then this is a bug.

I do quite like the "flying far" thing too, The ability to change screen size would be quite cool, could perhaps be a difficulty setting, as I'd imagine the game would be easier if it's a bit larger.
I'm not sure if it's just me, but I find the play button annoying, I think it's okay at the beginning of the level but it just becomes slightly tedious. Not sure what you think of it though?
Thanks once again, I can see myself spending more time on this game than I have already.
EDIT: Yup, it's doing that for me, I'm using FF3 on Vista

Great update. And very nice tutorial...
Is it possible to add a star or something as a bonus when passing a dive without hitting any rocks while falling?
After the first levels, where there are no obstacles etc, it's kinda challenging to make a "perfect dive".
And i mean perfect like "without hitting anywhere". I managed to get some 9+ and one 10, while hitting on rocks all the way down, but diving with the right position by accident.
I see two choices there...
- Hit somewhere? Instant failed dive. A kinda aggresive option.
- Second option is what i told at the beginning. No punishing, but rewarding the 100% perfect divers with a star or something.
What do you think?
Oh, i almost forgot it. After finishing the tutorial, there wasn't any button to press, just replay dive.
The only solution i found to get to the menu was to refresh the page.
EDIT: Everything works fine for me. Scores/flips are there, when i get back. I use FF3 too (on WinXP)...

How bout a health system? like if u get to 2/3 your limbs get a little unresponsive and at 1/3 it takes like 5 seconds to move something XD... Probably not so good idea but... Meh
I see you decided for a Open release then? If you do get that Sponsorship, how bout some buyable Expansions? That would require a New login system however, The expansions could add in new Levels or character designs (New costumes and such, a Fat Santa would be awesome :P) Id pay for them if they were anything up to 5 pound ($10) And you'd earn quite a bit of money... Or Donation system, so people get added extras such as Level Editor and such

Hmm, as for the "perfect dive" thing. I'll give it some thought. No promises though as I am really trying to just get the game finished and out so I can move on to something else. :-)
I'll look at the end of the tutorial. The "Main Menu" button should have been at the bottom left of the screen. Possibly it didn't stick out enough.

I'm not sure if it's just me, but I find the play button annoying, I think it's okay at the beginning of the level but it just becomes slightly tedious. Not sure what you think of it though?
Part of the reason the start button is there is because if the user resets the dive by clicking somewhere other than the center of the screen the diver will simply fall over because he's off balance.
The start button allows me to set the diver's stance and forces the player to begin with the mouse centered.
I have some ideas on how I could make this a little more friendly. I'll put it on my list.

Well I've only posted this beta here and one other site. I'd prefer the link wasn't passed around yet as I don't want too many people to play it before it's ready. So far I've been getting good feedback.

I managed to make my way through all the levels and the only thing that I didn't see was a more advanced tutorial pertaining to the diving boards (Not sure there isn't one because I forgot to check before I closed the window ><). I'm not even sure if I understand them completely now having completed all the levels. From what I gather you are required to touch every one of them to pass the level? If there was a tutorial that explained them I missed it and a good idea might be explaining them in the first level that they appeared in. Kind of like a "Hey Look at these things this is how they work" type of thing so the gamplay wouldn't be chopped up with one of the those fancier animated tutorials. The other tutorials covered the basics very nicely though.
The only other thing that I noticed was that levels 15,19,23 and 25 were overly difficult compared to the ones before and after them. The mixture of levels with different elements such as distance, height, amount of boards, and bouy positions relative to starting platform were well placed though (Not too many levels of the same elements right in a row which cut down on repetition). I would suggest making the heights of the structures in those levels a little lower or mabye just the ones in the first 1 or 2 to create a steeper incline in difficulty.
Other then those things I think this game is great. One of the best I have played in quite a while.

Thanks for the great feedback. I left diving board tutorials out because I thought the tutorials were already to long-winded. I will see about adding something about them... possibly like you mention, when you first encounter them.
I got rid of the requirement that all diving boards must be used. I found that it was un-necassary because you can't really get to the buoys unless you use them all. Plus, anymore than 2 diving boards and things are WAY to difficult.
I'll look at the levels you mentioned.
Finally, glad you liked the game. :-)

It seems quite a bit easier to control the difficulty of the the dives by calibrating the diving boards to different springiness/strength. I'm not sure how much harder the platform jumps can get... To me it seems like the platform jumps would be easy no matter what.

It's part skill really, after beating all the levels at least 2-3 times that level is pretty easy. The controls are really sensitive though and much of the way you land and launch off the diving board is luck until you can figure out how to reproduce the needed actions. For me the level you are stuck on would only take me at most 5-10 tries. I do believe that the diving boards on lvl 14,15,19 and maybe 23 need to be made more powerful allowing you to launch farther and higher (Cutting down on the difficulty).

If enough people end up playing it then I may come back and do another set of levels with some more features.
What would you guys think about an online high-score table? It would be the "Total" score that you see in the upper right corner of the Dive selection screen. You could "submit" your score at anytime. This way you could continually improve your score till you had 10s on everthing. :-)
Also, what are your thoughts on making the game screen a bit larger? I'm considering it for the final release. Maybe I will increas the screen size tonight and let you all try it.

Works fine for me. FF2 rar!
E: Those diving boards are annoying as hell. :( But, once I was in a position where it looked like I was sitting on the air, then my ass hit a cliff, my body became straight (then ragdolled), hit a cliff wall, fell onto a diving board, dived, jumped over a rock, and landed into a 2.5 score.

Ok, uploaded a new version.
If it doesn't work this time. Please right-click where the game SHOULD be and see if you get the "Silverlight Configuration" menu.
If so, click it and go to the "Application Storage" tab and delete any reference to "physics powered games"
Restart your browser and try again. Let me know what happens.
This is a tough one to debug because everything works for me.

Works fine for me, but I didn't try to play when it wasn't working. I like the bigger screen better too, gives you more room for moving the mouse.

Yeah, I'm wondering if the bug is related to some earlier version. I'm hoping by clearing the Silverlight Application Storage it will fix the issue... fingers crossed.

Damn!
Could one of you post a screenshot of what exactly your seeing? Are the ads showing up to the left and right?
Do you see the "Physics Powered Games" in the center of the screen... then the "loading..." text? Or is the center of the screen always blank?
If it's easier, you could also just send me a screenshot to 'jeffweber AT live.com'
thanks.

If I clear my cache, the loading screen will count to 100%, then it just blends to grey, as the background, the silverlight object can still be right-clicked.

Hey Jeff, I love what you've done with it, it's really effective!
A few suggestions however. One, to make a fullscreen version, it's horrible how it only reacts to movements inside it's box, where by instinct I do a massive swing across the mousepad for an epic backflip.
And I love the saving now. I can revert to my progress next time I play, which is a real advantage.
The diving boards are really difficult to get horizontal distance on, I think this could be made a lot easier with a fullscreen mode, without making it "easy".
How about a quick level start button? Like, press space and it resets and restarts a level, instead of all the clicking between failures.
And finally, I love the style of everything. The black and white monotone style is great, I'm glad you didn't over colourize the living hell out of everything.

By the way, I was thinking, it'd be awesome for you to make a pole vault game with a similar system. Use left and right to speed up (or a and d) when running, down (or s) to plant the pole into the ground when decided and the mouse to maneuouvre the man over the pole's height.

Ok, 1st. I just found and fixed a bug. I was attempting to load some media files that were no longer there. This MIGHT have been causing the issue.
Try it again and let me know.
The other thing I notice is you appear to have a different language type for your browser "Silverlight-Konfiguration" vs. "Silverlight-Configuration". This is something else I can look into if the problem still exists.
For everyone else that has the issue. What language is your OS/Browser using?
Thanks for you patience on this.
Oh yeah, I forgot, Google's new browser, Chrome, is compatible with Silverlight, however it doesn't load your game properly, loads it weirdly, or something. You should install it and check it out.

Try it again. I switched the language of my OS to non-English and I started getting the same thing you guys were seeing.
This allowed me to find my bug.
The bug has been squashed!

I'll see if I can do something about the quick level reset. The problem is the mouse has to be in the center of the screen when you reset or diver will fall over. I think i can change it so if you click in the middle of the screen to reset you will not get the start button. If you click OUTSIDE the center of the screen I have to show the start button. This way, if you click in the center of the screen to reset it will only be a single click.
I'll look into creating a bigger border around the game screen.
Glad you like the style. It's the best a non-artist could do. :-)
As for the pole-vaulting game. Sounds interesting.. i'll add it to my list of "game ideas".

Just an idea: Instead of clicking on the play button how about just mousing over it? That way you still have the cursor at the centre of the screen and you don't need to click or what not.

Funny, I was just implementing that this morning. If you click off-center, a circle will appear that says something like "Center mouse to activate Diver". If you click in the center of the screen, Diver will be ready to go right away.
I'll hopefully have that out for testing tomorrow morning.

I was meaning to suggest it earlier but kept forgetting. 'tis sounding good!
One other thing i've noticed
Underneath your "Total Score" there is a bit of text explaining how it is calculated and I think it may be wrong or something?
As it currently says "Total Score = Total Dive Score + .1 X Total Flips)
I'm assuming you've missed out something in there? Also does total dive score mean the marks out of 10?
Sorry for all the questions and nit picking

Well the restart button didn't work out quite like i thought it would so I didn't do it quite like you mentioned. Instead, it will simply not show the start button if you click in the center of the screen. If you happen to click off-center it will behave as it does now and show the start button that you then have to click. So, resets are very quick as long as you click the center of the screen.
By "Total Dive Score" I mean the sum of the dive scores (9.2 for example)accross ALL dives. Tota flips are the sum of all flips accross all the dives. I wanted the dive score to account for the majority of the total score hence the .1
Make sense? Maybe I need to word it better on the screen. Something like Sum of all Dive Scores + .1 * Sum off all flips...

Just wanted to thank everyone that played the Diver beta and gave feedback.
This is my first "finished" game. The feedback has helped a lot.
I've taken the beta offline as I prepare for the final release. There won't be to many changes from what you've already played. Just some minor re-working of things based on feedback.
Once the game is released, if there is enough demand I'll probably make another set of levels and maybe add some of the more elaborate feedback suggestions. Will have to wait and see how things go.
Till then I'll begin working on my next physics powered game... :-)

I'll be releasing sometime next week. I'll post in the "Introducing Diver.." thread when it's ready.
