Cortex Command, Build 23.

Cortex Command is a 2d sidescrolling action platformer, featuring squad based combat and complex physics.
The environments in Cortex Command are fully destructible; so is absolutely everything in the game. Any character can be "gibbed" into its component parts, then gibbed into their component parts, then ripped into their component pixels, meaning that powerful weapons can literally turn people into red clouds.
The game is fully moddable, with a variable-based syntax that's easy to learn, but hard to master. As of B23, the game has an integrated Lua console, and supports Lua integration in all objects using script plugins.
From Build 19, the game is no longer free, but a demo is available, which features a six minute skirmish time limit, access to the five campaign levels, and the ability to mod (and use mods).
A full version key, which is available for 18 dollars, and also pays for any and all updates up to the final version (meaning buy it once, you get a key that lasts forever), features unlimited skirmish time, full access to the campaign, though it's still only the five missions, and access to four editors, which are useful for modding.
The community is full of active modders, and the forums are constantly full of new content.
As of the latest build (23), the game has a wealth of new, first-party content, and several factions are well fleshed out, though still not finalized according to the developers.
All in all, Cortex Command is a fabulous game.

For the uninitiated
Cortex Command is a physics based game in which the entire world is composed of destroyable particles. Taking heavy fire? Here, take this RPG and make yourself a foxhole. Anti-air fire bringing down your dropships. Here's a digger. Make a tunnel.
The game is highly moddable with a completely open-source engine. EVERYTHING is changeable. Health, cost, weapons, ammo. EVERYTHING

EDIT: Cortex Command has recently received an update. Enabling 4-player multiplayer and mouse aiming.
Ah.
Love CC, and the sheer customization, with an easy to learn language, is AWESOME.
Rockets that go 500 mph from a one second burst of thrust, and have 1 million health? Make for AWESOME drills.
SMGs that shoot 100000 rounds in a second, putting Metal Storm to shame.
Grenade launchers, sniper rifles, riot shields, and just about any other weapon you can think of.
Ah. Good times.

Cortex Command is going to be one of the greatest pixel/physics games ever. Just imagine a scene editor, or a campaign that'll keep you playing. CC is already very entertaining, and it's just build 13. I can't wait for it to be completed. It's possible that it will be as great as Toribash!

Yeah, Cortex Command is an awesome game. The ability to change the environment in-game is innovative and the possibilties in modding is astounding. It's a shame that it's going commercial though, but I'll pay for it even if it costed more than $30.

Great game, the physics and graphics give it a density and chunkiness that I really love. My only hope is that higher screen resolutions are implemented, with the potential to zoom in and out so you can see what's going on with a bit more scope. I'm not sure how likely that is, though.

Yah... Problem is when you over-mod it. The original files, I mean.
I have build 9 on a USB disk and have been changing files (You know, putting legs where arms should be and vice-versa, stuff like that)
Went into Effects to try to up the power of the jetpack. And it did so. Hugely.
And then crashed.
Now it won't restart after a game without me getting the message "Has encountered a problem and needs to close"

I tried to install it once but the download kept crashing:) , maybe ill try a download manager now that I hear these raves.

You can change the scene resolution.

On a keyboard, wich is the only one I tried, I find the controls a bit hard. And its confusing to control many things, and the AI is difficult to take, even on easy.
That's what modding is for.
Seriously, a single modded weapon enabled me to survive for half an hour on "Death" mode.

Are there any way to make the game-mode to Sandbox? Like just playing around, not worrying about enemies?
EDIT; This game has Xbox360 control support, but does a logitech gamepad work just as fine? Anyone tried?
The latest dev log claims all gamepads should be supported, since it has fully mappable controls.
Oh, and for "sandbox", I'd say just to Brain V Brain, AKA multiplayer.
Just click the Player Two icon once after making a 2 person skirmish game.

If the controllers use for example USB ports and you have 2 or more USB ports, then yes, you can. Most gamepads are compitable with Cortex Command. I had a Logitech controller, but it's broken. :(

This game is perfect. A ten out of ten! Easy to mod, and mod everything, lots of mods! Gore and blood, awesome physics, utter destruction, four player combat!!! What else can't you say?!:)

I just started screwing around with a little modding today. I haven't made too much though, just a new gun that's basically a modified AK-47 that shoots 1,000 bullets in a fraction of a second.

Yeah CC lets you mod yourself some huge Super Weapons. Just yesterday I made it so the grenade explosion creates acid then melts anything causing there holes to be through the terrain but because I made there 10000 Acid Particles the hole map was demolished.

CC is right now an open beta. After the game comes out of beta he said it would either be shareware, or commercial. I hope shareware, but meh.

That's still a ways off. I mean, most retail games are in the hundreds with their build numbers (although they don't publish the numbers, there are hacky ways of finding out)

* SLOW CRUSHING OF ANY GIBBABLE OBJECT

* Vastly improved collision detection and response, both against terrain and other objects. Still not perfect, but much better
* Physics simulation and graphical framerate decoupled! This means no matter what your FPS is, the physics will behave EXACTLY the same. No more sinking into terrain because things are slowing down.
* Completely new sets of small gibs and particles
* AI mode control - hold down the switch actor button, and then press a direction to select a different mode for the Actor you’re switching away from
* Your team’s actors are now ordered by their horizontal positions in the scene. Press right switch button and you’ll get the closest guy to your right, for example.
* Much fewer intersection problems with the terrain. Things are not as likely to get embedded and weaken bunker walls.
* ‘Tunneling’ through terrain much less likely to happen
* Enemy AI ships won’t appear directly over your base any more, only on opposite half of scene.
* Long wielded devices are prevented from sticking into terrain; can’t poke a long cannon through walls anymore
* Scene terrains are now simple RLE Bitmaps instead of using weird contour files. Paint your terrain with the material palette and save as 8-bit bitmap with RLE compression, and presto you have a terrain
* Only loads all data once on startup of game, so it’s much quicker to reset or restart the scene.
* …Lots more, going to fill out later by looking at source control logs
What this does NOT have:
* Campaign mode.. saving it for the real game.
* Scene Editor.. ditto.
* Gibbable ships and new ships, working on these, some may appear in next test build
* New guys and guns.. may save for real game too
* Ability to force reload of all ini’s without restarting game, will be in next build.

It's a MUCH better physics engine than the previous one, thank god they disconnected the frame rate and physics, that was really annoying..
If you check out the Data Realms forums you can see they are also making a bunch of mods already for this new build. Yay!

Here is how to download/install a CC mod: (Note: You must register on the forum in order to download scenes.)
Click Download on the first post of the thread for the mod you are looking to download.
Open the .zip/.rar/.7z file with the compatible program of your choice .( I suggest WinRAR (http://www.rarlabs.com/).)
Click the program's "Extract" button, and choose your Cortex Command base directory. (Normally it's C:\Program Files\Data Realms\Cortex Command\)
Click OK to extract the .rte file that was inside the .zip/.rar/.7z file you downloaded to the Cortex Command directory.
Cortex Command's user friendly mod system then kicks in and finishes the job by finding the .rte file and loading it when the game loads. You should then be able to use it, no matter what the mod is.
Enjoy your mod!

I don't think I'll update just yet, I have Build 13 and tons of mods that I like (the wiimote and the acid canisters especially). I may aswell wait for the full game unless they make a really cool build. I also hope that the full game doen't become shareware like toribash did.

BTW, Is there any way to turn off the "automatic" pilot thingie of the rockets?
I hate it, it's much more fun to crash the rocket to enemies after you have dropped the guys/weapons you ordered. And it sucks in that way too that you can't buy only rocket (without anything inside, I mean), because it goes back to "heaven" right away.
Kinda hard to explain :o

That's really odd.. It shouldn't go straight back up if it's empty.. Also, like razer said. When you are placing the location of the order, press your jump and down keys to cycle between "Deliver and then RETURN," and "Fly here and STAY."

It does at first seem to have odd controles but once you get used to them they work well. if your impatient you can always use an X box 360 controler which is supposed to work great, although I have never tried this. The game has become much more playable in build 14. Many annoying glitches have been fixed and the skelitons no longer walk through your bunker:) . the mods for this game are unreal although many of them won't work for the new build untill they are updated.

It does at first seem to have odd controles but once you get used to them they work well. if your impatient you can always use an X box 360 controler which is supposed to work great, although I have never tried this. The game has become much more playable in build 14. Many annoying glitches have been fixed and the skelitons no longer walk through your bunker:) . the mods for this game are unreal although many of them won't work for the new build untill they are updated.
Dude, you have to get a 360 controller for CC. The gameplay seems a bit more smooth.

cookies are good but there is no need to spam about them, i think cortex needs to be able to let the characters run and the ragdoll needs improving, and it would be a good idea to release it on DS and mabe PSP

Hmm... For some reason it wasn't as fun. Probably because I didn't have my favorite mod ever... MAXMILLIAN! *super-awesome theme song* It's a mod with a guy who's got a half-bulletproof body and a super-awesome reverse vacuum. He's like... made from frozen Awesome.

OMG download finally worked (every other builds downloads didn't work for me [don't know why they just didn't]) with all the mods I downloaded I have somewhere around 200 guns (likely more), and I'm working on one of my own add-on/mod. Its going to be a drop ship that just falls straight down no boosters (its has been done before but I'm trying to add a few extra unique things to it).
I play with a 360 controller (gives a use for my wired controller)

My friend did that back in Build 13, you can't do it so well in Build 14+, with the glitching through the ground bug fixed and all. I really should go and find someone to play Build 16 with.

That frequently happens with me. Just press Alt+Enter. Repeat until the colors fix. Restart if necessary. That always works for me.

oh my god.. i just got back from playing 3 hours straight on the same match.. eventually the map got so cluttered with broken rockets and bodies that I couldn't play from the lag!
my favorite moment? when a shuttle was already off the screen.. i shot it down with an smg and it crashed into the people it just deployed.
I'm sure you've all heard about how great it is.. but I can't help but give a review! :D

Multiplayer would just win. 16 players in CC would be complete destruction.... THINK OF THE MASSIVE BATTLES!
I figure a 16 player match would still be two teams, but each team would be divided into sections. Green Alpha, Green Beta, Green Charlie, etc., or Green 1, Green 2, Green 3, etc. and only their commander could control them, so as to avoid confusion. Also, to prevent complete loss of who's unit one's was, each section would be a lighter or darker shade of the team's color, whether it be red or green.
No matter how they do it, it would be EPIC.

i would say that internet play with cortex command with all the mods, would be impossible, but then i thoguht of osme other games that you can mod, and they work fine.
the only thing i dont like about cortex command is, the new update with building your own bunkers in game, i wish they could just make a option called scene edit or something, and also because i think it should be a bit more fast pased too, but other than that, i guess its ok. :D

Which is the best part!
I love destroying dropships. It's just fun to watch the ship fall do the ground and crush it's own troops before rolling across the battlefield and squashing yours too.

I agree, but they become part of the terrain as they die, and the more there are, the more complex the terrain is, which causes lag for me eventually. (But then, my computer sucks....)

well, the destroyable terrain is fine. but the thing that bugs me, is how small the screen is in windows mode. and the color messes up in full screen mode. that needs to be fixed in the next test build.

It's not impossible to have multiplayer online and with the mods. You could load it as temporary files just like in Gmod, although it would take quite a while to code ;) .

Plus the cortex command forum seams to be down so it stops my compulsive mod downloads, which brings me to a question what in your opinion is the best CC mod?
My favorite is the Mole Machine, since it causes so much havoc.

oh, i like tons of mods. including the amazing crobos!!!:eek: which someone not long ago converted to the latest build!:D the problem with the latest builds, is that there's not enough mods. there's tons of mods, but it seems if no one can get enough of 'em. and there's not enough sences too. and this time when i say that, i mean there's few. and that backwards compatabillity patch doesn't work either. or atleast with build 14 mods. why would someone make a patch like that, but doesn't make build 14 mods compatible.
actually i use to be a member of the data realms community. but i forgot my password, and everytime i try to register, it says, "this e-mail is not allowed." so now i just stalk there forums, hoping to get more and cooler sences and mods.
by the way, can some one help me with the color prob? a computer expert or know it all?
EDIT: it also seems if people in there community have bad taste in mods, music, and maps. the only good thing they and i think are good, is crobos.

Well, after shaking off the awful experience from...near the start of Cortex Command... I tried it again, with the new build.
I loved it, for one simple reason...building your own bunker. ._.
I think I spent ages making the 'perfect defense'...though it's not like the enemies are smart, since all they do is pile up below the brain bunker. :\
Though robots are smarter, they managed to 'learn' that there's one opening in my bunker, which I missed, and used it to get in. Then eventually flew a ship through the wall and destroyed my brain. ._.

There already is a door mod, along with turrets [which become automated (at least as automated as the AI can make it...) when you're not controlling it]. I don't believe they are for Build 17, though, considering the rush of new builds has modders sort of flustered, but who knows, they might work. how to install: first, download it to a separate folder. then open up your main CC folder. then, open up base, then music, then watts. you see a file that's named "last man.ogg". back it up, then open up the file of the music you just downloaded. then drag it to the watts folder that the default last man file was. then play the game, then BAM!!! you got yourself some new rockin' music!:eek:

I kind of started making a castle module, but Ive never programed levels or modules before so its likely to never be finished. Although most of them are just remakes of the original set (so you can make an entire castle) so I could probably just steel some of there coding.

There aren't really any tutorials for modding, at least none that are up-to-date. You might want to just dissect the Base.rte folder, or a large mod. It's a simple enough modding system that you can learn it that way. Good luck, also PM with those doors if you can get 'em. :)

Grif says he'll help me with my problems there, so I doubt I'll have trouble.
Also, a door mod wouldn't work. Since it'd have to be an actor. And then control would be very annoying.

if you did that and still not buyable(in game, not editor, ) search the use find next in the rte and find buyable, and change it to 1

How do I make mods? I just joined the forums last night and I'm ay too lazy to find out on my own.
It's pretty easy to learn. Just start by looking at your Base.rte, What I did was just copy paste the HDFirearm code for the Ak-47, started editing values and seeing what they did and what they meant.
Then, to pack it into an individual RTE, take the code for your mods that are in Base.rte and put them in their own file and folder, Mod_Name.rte and INI_Name.ini, respectively. Also copy any sprites or sound your gun uses into your folder. Make sure all of your .ini's referring to sprites and sounds are updated to refer to the new location of the sound/sprite, like Base.rte/Devices/Rifles/AK-47005.wav would become Mod_Name.rte/AK-47005.wav, or changing if you put it in a sub-folder. Then create a file called Index.ini in your Mod RTE, and use it to reference your ini files, so CC knows what to load. Use the following syntax for an Index.ini:
DataModule
IncludeFile = Mod_Name.rte/Name.ini
IncludeFile = Mod_Name.rte/Name.ini
And voila! If you did everything correctly, the mod should work!

Also, I'd be only a little bit unsure about buying it if it had no online multiplayer. After all, it's fun currently, and I wouldn't really call it at commercial quality just yet.

Also, to anyone annoyed about the numerous skeletons: Go to activities.ini and use Ctrl+F to find "skeleton", then replace it with anything else. It makes fighting a lot more fun, because skeletons don't bleed or spark!
