View Full Version : Phun: A Fun Physics Playground

Hi All
Another program along the same lines as Crayon, Marker Physics. This one seems to have some nice extras. Called Phun and can be found Here (http://www.phun.at/). And a Video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0H5g9VS0ENM).
You'll need a decent computer with hardware 3D (well, 2D) acceleration that can handle shaders. The author will try to make it work on older hardware somewhere in the future.
Phun is still beta, so don't expect it to work perfectly. Linux version also available and a Mac version in a day or two.
A new version (2.5) has just been released which removes the need for Shader 2.0 hw and adds some extra features.
And another new version (2.51) is out which does fix the shader problem people still seem to have.
Mac version has now been released.

For you Phun builders out there I found a handy little add on for making gears and racks Here (http://www.codebot.org/articles/?doc=9516).

Place the wheels where you want on the body, click hinge, add the hinge to the center of the wheel, attaching it to the body. Then right click the hinge circle and mark the box next to "Hinge motor". Then select the speed under it and voila. A "car"!

I've made a gun out of a piston, which pushed bouncy balls horizontally, and im working on making it into a gun shape using a spring for the ammo, which shouldnt be too hard.
Edit: Springs are hard to use, so im using wter to push a platform, which is alot easyer, i'll post a picture soon.

I found this in a text document labeled TODO packaged in the download for the game.
Planned opimizations:
- 'Frustum' culling of objects (small gain)
- A non-shader rendering path for (really) old video cards
- Broadface collision detection (Will speedup any scene whith lots of objects, especially if there's water in it)
- Faster SPH/Water (probably a two- or threefold optimization possible)
- Multicore support (can maybe cram out a twofold speed increase on dual cores)
So hopefully all of us with shader problems will get to play...eventually. He also seems to be optimizing the water quite a bit.

if the game doesn't run at all it's either because you haven't installed the attatched files that help run it, or you can't install them because your computer doesn't get atleast 64 pixels/square inch *kicks computer*
unfortunately i fall into the second category(highest is 32).

sergiekun
02-14-2008, 11:28 PM
hell.
it should work for 16 bit.
but 32 is much better :)
as for 64 bit... wtf? ok, so one pixel on your screen is a bit better colored, so what.
32 bit is good enough.
as for HD lol, for TV it's good. computers... they already look good, and are not screwed up by camera's with poor quility, therefor they would only need HD if the game sucks. (graphic wise i mean)

Then again...
Instructions: once you have extracted the files you must install vcredist. You do this by locating your new Phun folder and running vcredist_x86.exe (or vcredist_x64.exe, if you happen to be using a 64-bit windows). Once this is done you should be able to run the program (phun_beta_2_3.exe).
Where did the whole 64-bit thing come up? Apperently it's just the shaders activing up. Right?
I googled 64 bit monitors, I didn't find any monitor references.

Supposedly it's HD monitors. I had no idea so when someone claimed 64 bit monitor meant HD I assumed that I had one. Being mine is HD. So yeah I don't even know.

Basically, there's a green building, and you have a catapult and a few different ammo types...
There's the standard stones/balls, which... Are standard...
And there's a water-glob, which is quite heavy, laggy and splashy.
And lastly, there's some chains... They're heavy, but somewhat difficult to launch.
The catapult is manually used, so it may take a little thinking to hit the building accurately.
And yes, i made that building myself.

I can't afford one. But seeing that complaining about a Mac is an odd way to approach something. If you use your Mac for editing purposes good for you. But if not, then you should obviously consider why get a Mac. Mac is only good for three things. Mac's are powerful. Easy to use, yet can accomplish difficult tasks. And finally security. If you are a gamer or wish to be so, then don't, by all means get a Mac. Get a PC. Cheaper, and everything works on it.

Mac is only good for three things. Mac's are powerful. Easy to use, yet can accomplish difficult tasks. And finally security. If you are a gamer or wish to be so, then don't, by all means get a Mac. Get a PC. Cheaper, and everything works on it.
Mac's may be powerful when you get them, but since they are just screens, you can't upgrade them accordingly. You'de have to shell out 2000$ for one with a better graphics card then the one you have now instead of 300$.
Also, what are these difficult tasks? Last I knew, PC could run almost anything a mac could...

I'm so sad!!!!! I wash wishing a game like this for years!!! But its another game that dont run on my computer because of pixel shaders. Kind of what i was elaborating there:
http://www.fun-motion.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1416
I just change my graphic card for a GeForce fx5500 , not that good, but it support pixel shaders!!! I can now enjoy this WANDERFUL game. I love making car with suspension and some big line production machine!! But one thing i don't understand; why does the majority of little software that simulate water, simulate it like a gas more than a liquid. The water can be compressed almost indefinitely.... Liquid cant compress!

I'm not sure if ALL the problems we are having are pixel shader 2.0 related. The built-in graphics card on my laptop supposedly has pixel shader 2.0 (According to EVEREST) but so far nothing that uses pixel shader 2.0 will work for me. I'm just hoping for a non-pixel shader 2.0 release sometime soon.

A new version is out now which has these changes:
Changelog:
* Added a non-shader render path (turn on by putting "App.shaders=false;" in autoexec.cfg).
* Added the ability to control hinge motors with the arrow keys.
* Upgraded the tools so that you can draw with the hinge-, drag- and fixate-tools.
* Upgraded the brush tool to drawing straight lines when SHIFT is pressed (thanks to the people who suggested this feature)
* Added an option for drawing objects inside other objects
* Added an option for hiding hinges and fixates when the simulation is running (thanks for the tip, Jooh4n).
* Added autosave of config file.
* Fixed a bug where moving hinged objects may break the hinge
* Fixed a bug where 'Zoom to scene' wouldn't work
* Added detachable submenus to the popup-menu.
* Did some small rendering optimizations
* Added air buoyancy (lighter-than-air flight possible for light-weight objects)
* Renamed CRASH.cfg and LAST.cfg to _AUTOSAVE.cfg and _ONEXITSAVE.cfg

A new update is out that will hopefully work for those still with Shader problems.
As some of you noticed, beta 2.5 didn't really fix the shader problem, so here comes beta 2.51. If 2.51 won't run off the bat, then uncomment the last line of autoexec.cfg so that it says "Resources.shaders = false;". If that doesn't help, then nothing will.

Hi, glad so many of you like my game!
There has been some confusion about my reference to 64-bit Windows. This has nothing to do with your monitor capabilities, but on the version of your operating system. Most people run on a 32-bit Windows, and so should install vcredist_x86.exe. A few geeks run 64-bit Windows, and should instead use vcredist_x64.exe. However, Phun should work on both 32-bit and 64-bit Windows, so there is no "need" for 64-bit.
Now, a lot of people has been having trouble with shaders. I tried to fix this with beta 2.5, but it didn't take, so I have today released beta 2.51 with another shader fix. Hopefully this will help; if not, I'm sorry.
And sorry about the delay of the MacOS version, I hope it will be released within the next few days.

2) Go to brush tool, start the simulation, and then lift up the bottom box. (While on brush tool)
...you will notice the collision 'bug' I am talking about.

Explore the interface, try using all the tools in different ways (clicking on things, dragging things, dragging the background) and see what happens. Right-click on things and explore the popup menu, trying different options in it. Save and load files in the File menu. Don't be affraid to experiment, press ctrl-undo when you do something bad.

I made a drivable car(arrow keys) with some bridges and terrain to cross.

well, i made few simple cars.
one of them was "nanocar" that was 1/3 of a waterdrop.
and then i made a 3 wheeled car that was supposed to run away from a flood.
the water catched the car and then they all hitted the ramp, car went first, and when it hitted the ground, a rain came on top of it.

Well, first i made a box, then (In pause) i placed a thin brick, the blade, right click on it and say place hinge in center, then right click on the hinge that just appeared and look at the bottom of the little window, it says "Hinges >" click on that, then check the thing that says control with arrow keys, now change it to the appropriate rpm, finally put a Large block in the blender and right click on it saying liquify selected.
Enjoy!

It should. Same mass, same gravity, same distance, same rotation, air resistance... Well, you get the point; If nothing's changed, it should and will land to the same spot.
Maybe... GRAVITY IS WEAKENING!!!!!
Anyway i got this problem. Its that sumtimes the drag button will eather become the brush or it wont drag when its paused.... Not sure why... :(

The drag button becomes the brush tool when you click open space and as far as I know you are not supposed to be able to drag when it is paused.(I use the joint or fix buttons when it is paused to drag things, if you click and hold you can drag the object without jointing or fixating them) If you right click you can also rotate objects.

Drag only works while paused, drag is the tool that is meant for realtime moving.
Brush can be used to move objects during play and pause.

The drag tool must be able to start grabbing when paused (ie, it can't move when paused), else it can be very hard to "catch" objects with the it.
The tools are not very intuitive at the moment, do you have any suggestions how to organize the different functionality?
Kokopelli13
02-19-2008, 12:39 AM
Nope its fine. :) I just read the "Help!" wrong. EDIT: Well i have an ideas when you pause it and move sumthing you can choose to let the object "keep" it momentum.

In the non-shader version, liquifying something makes it disappear! I can't run shaders--is the water just the same color as the background?

Yeah, I noticed that, except it only happens every once in a while for me. The water is visibly darker than the sky.

New version of Phun out, beta 3! Go get it at www.acc.umu.se/~emilk/
Changelog:
* Added the ability to choose object color
* Added the ability to follow objects (right-click them to do so, and right-click background to stop).
* Optimized any scene containing water (more speed improvements to come though).
* Added a file command for removing all water from a scene
* Holding down shift while rotating now rotates in increments of 15°
* Prevented popups from coming to close to the bottom right corner of the screen.
* Set vsync off by default for better performance. Turn on again with System.vSync = true;
* Removed a couple of usages of OpenGL before I had a GL context (may have caused some start-up crashes).
* Fixed a bug where deleting things while moving them would cause the program to crash.
* Added circle LOD; if a circle is less than 10 pixels wide, it will be drawn in a simpler and faster way.
* No longer create the last hinge of a chain connected to the same body (like the world).
* Fixed a bug where you couldn't undo a clone
* Several minor fixes and tweaks.
* Added a Phun program icon by Marty
* Renamed scene files from .cfg to .phn (your old files will be renamed automaticly at startup, and there is full backwards-compability by just renaming).
* Fixed so you know can tell Windows explorer so associate .phn files to Phun (you could before too, but now it works)
* Added an option for simple water rendering (good for FPS and for those having trouble with the other water render paths)
* Holding down ALT while clicking a chain let's you select individual joints.
Tell me how it's working out for you, esepecially if beta 3 is the first release you can run.

Hey, i tried something, I duplicate about 1000 litle circle, make them no bouncy and friction. I run couple of test and it actually act more like real water than the water simulation itself. My observation: the circle don't interpenetrate in each other as much as the water particle (actually little circle rigid bodies to) do. But the simulation is a bit slower because the circle have some graphics. :(
P.S. Hope my observation report would help in the game creation so that the next release have better water simulation.:)
Oh! and special thanks to Kotsoft for the interpenetrating description he gave me on his fabulous Polluted Planet game Thread.
EDIT: oups! in fact, my simulation with circle is faster at same particle/rigid circle number!! Why? Because there is less colisions. And why there is more colision? because water particles are interpenetrating so much that they collide with not only the particle beside (or under..)of them but with those that are 2 or 3 layers of particles deeper.

It's not scripted, meaning each outcome can be different everytime. Basically, no set calculations for what's happening. More realistic and less uniform. Can be annoying for people trying to make Rube Goldberg Machines and such.

Did you try to disable shaders in the autoexec.cfg file?
App = {GUI.Component.App};
Console = {GUI.Component.Console};
exit = {System.exit};
App.simRunning = false;
time = {System.time};
sin = {math.sin};
cos = {math.cos};
groovyOn = {
App.fadeColor = [0.8, 0, 0.9];
App.fadeTranslate = { [3 * sin(time), 2 * sin(time)] };
App.fadeRotate = { sin(System.time*1.2) };
App.Background.skyColor = [0,0,0,0];
};
groovyOff = {
App.fadeColor = [0, 0, 0];
App.Background.skyColor = [0.3, 0.4, 1, 1];
};
Keys.bind("space", {Sim.running = ! Sim.running});
Keys.bind("f4", {Sim.gravitySwitch = ! Sim.gravitySwitch});
Keys.bind("f5", {App.drawVertices = ! App.drawVertices});
Keys.bind("f6", {App.drawBodyCenters = ! App.drawBodyCenters});
Keys.bind("f8", {App.drawCollisions = ! App.drawCollisions});
Keys.bind("f12", {System.screenshot});
// Remove the // on the line below to run without shaders
//Resources.shaders = false;
On another note, does anyone notice that some lag happens on the littlest collisions? Yet then there's big collisions that don't cause any lag. Just noticed it this version.
