View Full Version : Penumbra Overture, SCARY!

Omg, just got this game and it's scary!
It really freaked me out when I was close to a barricaded door, and someone started whispering to me.
The developers really did a good job making some creepy sounds.
And the small puzzles you have to solve is quite good.
I havent gotten that far out in the game, but atm it's worth all the money!
Anyone else played it?

I didn't even play the demo, too creepy.

It's not just a game, it's an experience :)
Do yourself a favor and play it after midnight, alone - that means without friends joking around :p , with lights closed... and no cheating with gamma or brightness!
The whole feeling reminded me of the Lovecraft's book 'At the Mountains of Madness', the ones read it sure will get what i'm talking about ;)

We stoped after 15 minutes, way to scary

I've played a few scary games, like Condemned, SH and F.E.A.R., but they were nothing compared to this...
soad667
04-01-2007, 03:30 PM
Yeah, Condemned way too predictable and FEAR had these gunfights that were ruining the scary part of the game. But it was a great FPS and the gunfights were more than enjoyable, so i forgive it :)
But Penumbra has this... 'bad' feeling everywhere, as for relaxing points... guess: nowhere :D
Survival horror at its best.................... ;)

This is great, no guns or anything. You must use brains and traps to kill the monsters that can just rip you apart :D

But, there`s one thing wich annoys me.
And that`s the monster animations, they are kind of bad.
And it looks like something from 2000.

You can bar them with a chair and crap in the full one, till the monster break the door down anyway :D

Is this a full game yet? I loved the demo, but it keeps making my PC overheat and die :P
The monsters could do with being made a bit more scary though, after all the creepy atmosphere it was kind of disappointing to come up against a flying maggot with teeth :P

Agreed, that was out of line, Killa. If a person has to say something, let them say it in the thread that is appropriate. You would have gotten mad if there was a repeat thread, or he had posted this randomly somewhere. Just calm down, it was no big deal.
Also, I have yet to work up the nerve to play this game. (Horror games in general just freak me out for days, even if they are the kind that aren't even scary. I just think they will be and don't sleep...)

I was creeped out the entire time I played this game... I was so twitchy even if I bumped into something, i'd mercilessly attack the sound with anything I had available. So, in effect, most wooden things that could break, were completely destroyed. It is such an awesome game!
P.S. DAMN SPIDERS!!

You think "He doesn't like the game" not true. I like the game.
So now you think "Oh, the demo overheated his computer" nope. Not that either.
And now your thinking "WTF?"
Well, the demo wouldn't work for me. I start off in the boat room thing. I grab all the stuff I need, I open the door, it loads the next level, and then the game freezes, crashes and dies.
Help?

That would ruin the whole point of Penumbra. It's not a FPS. The fact that the character isn't some Rambo knock-off and probably couldn't fire a gun worth crap anyway is what makes the game unique and scary.

What about Zombie Survival from Gmod 10? I don't think Zombie Mod should be mentioned though because one hit is a kill from a zombie. But their both really intense and fun.
I haven't tried Penumbra yet because of the feedback I'm seeing. I'm scared really easily and I've only gotten to the second level of FEAR if that tells you anything. (I've had the game for about a month.)

I played the demo, it rocked, I definitely want this for Christmas, but hey, the demo wasn't scary at ALL. Maybe the dog in the end is, but not very. If you think this is scary, try Afraid of Monsters (http://www.moddb.com/mods/7579/afraid-of-monsters-dc), seriously, Penumbra is Teletubbys compared to this. Not physics related, it's a mod for Half-Life. But hey, I've only played the demo of this game, maybe it is as scary as you say it is.

I really REALLY don't know what anyone was smoking when they said F.E.A.R was a scary game... It didn't bother me in the slightest. THESE games, however, are scary:
Doom3 - Because of the relentless terror and dispair around you. It's the un-diluted hoplessness and the suffocating stark mood of the game that is both depressing and soul destroying at the same time. I played this at night, alone with no light and a locked door. It was a truly shocking experience.
The Dark Eye - I talked about this on another thread. Just use the magic search button and search for "The Dark Eye" to see what I though about this chilling masterpiece.
Silent Hill 1 & 4 - These two in the series for some reason stand out as being an utter brown experience.
Fatal Frame 2: Crimson Butterfl - Seriously, DON'T PLAY THIS GAME! It may be the scariest thing you'll ever do in the video gaming world. I will not say anything more incase I ruin it.
Afraid of Monsters: Directors Cut - I think someone just mentioned this, but let me underline his point, for a shitty-looking HL1 mod this is really really disturbing. From the start of the hopsital you are aware straight away that you are playing something really special, and the nightmare-ish monsters really stick in your mind... which is bad.
System shock 2 - From the same people who gave you Bioshock, a haunted-house-in-space thriller from the same old days as HL1. This is a very cleverly made game and is widley forgottten by the public. Which is a shame because I think anyone can appreciate the time and effort put into this game and it is STILL pretty scary today.
In a wierd way the Max Payne series was pretty scary too, especially the nightmares...
Oh, FEAR IS NOT SCARY!

I found Bioshock rather creepy. Not scary, but creepy, because almost all of the enemies were just normal people, insane normal people, but the screams still creep me out when I burn them.
You want scary? Play against my friend on Halo 3 Ninja-Naught, doesn't sound scary, but he knows how to mess with people's heads, heck, once we had a near impenetrable defense against him, so he sneaked in a bubble shield, we all freaked out and fired around randomly, allowing him to get in and hide in the corner while we panicked wildly.

Doom 3 isnt scary, infact i think its funny as (insert profanities here) u just walk round the whole game on easy with a torch or your fists and nothing can kill you lol, i completed it on the xbox with just my fists and my torch..... SIlent hill isnt either i just laugh whenever i see people with pyramid heads, however F.E.A.R is imo, i mean its not like scary scary but more shock.....

I don't like games that continuously creep you out through the whole game, like you have some ominous being staring down on you wherever you go. Crap that pops out doesn't scare me the least bit. And I've played Doom 3 at night in a garage with the lights out and all I could hear was the big ventilation thing on the cieling. That was one of the worst experiences ever. Just look at the box, "Not for the faint of heart". It warns you about other stuff also, I think, but that really flipped a switch in my head when I read that sentence. And Beakless, just because one thing scares someone else doesn't mean their wimps or whatever you implied by saying that FEAR is not scary. It's called psychological fear, and that scares the hell out of me. You must have been in World War II or just saw a lot of scary crap in your life if FEAR didn't scare you because most gamers that are on TV or some kind of media broadcast called it one of the scariest games of all time. So go crawl in your corner acting manly while the rest of us truthfully admit our fears and phobias. Thanks for your time.

What? "Acting manly"? Did you even read my post?! The whole post was about games that have scared me... How is that acting manly? "...the rest of us truthfully admit our fears and phobias" DUH! That what I was talking about in the whole post!
Doom3 didn't scare me by things jumping out at me or whatever, as I said IN MY POST, it was the sheer hoplessness of the situation you were in, and the relentless horror around you. Not something jumping out at me.
You wanna know why I didn't find F.E.A.R. scary? Because there was nothing to be sacred of. Simple. I loved F.E.A.R. as a game, but as a horror? Pathetic. It tried to make you jump all the time by having objects move around you and seeing ghosts, but apart from that, there was little to actually be scared about.
For example, early on in the game, when you see the images of dead peoples faces flash up on the screen, it may make you jump, but that's it, theres no lasting fear that follows it. Whereas in The Dark Eye... I'll try not to spoil it so I'll warn you all now... Spoiler warning Spoiler The sqeuences that lead to you getting buried alive and the slow, painful process if listening to yourself suffocating It's safe, the spoiler has gone! That is an experience that will genuinely disturb you, even now, I still have that image of the wood over my head...
Anyway, the point is, I'm not trying to prove how many I am, becuase that's just, so not the point. F.E.A.R. was very dissapointing in terms of a scary experience, instead, look into some of the things in my list. And for god sake READ my posts befoure you slag me off.
Oh, by the way. Download and play the FREE mod Hidden : Source for HL2. It's a very very intense and frighterning experience.

Yeah, it isn't scary in terms of monsters and things jumping at you, but what scares me the most is the fact that I might have a guy right behind me and I can't see him. I'm always running from something I don't even know is there. You can't see your enemy but you know he is close. The worst thing is when you have a teammate in front of you and you are running towards him, when suddenly he is downed and disappears. Or the person next to you isn't next to you anymore.

Yeah. It's the hopelessness that makes the game scary. As Beak said. Hmmm... Gotta download it again tomorrow =)

Yeah, they are always gald to help newbies, after all, the better the hidden, the better the game!
Condemed: Criminal Origins was also quite scary come to think of it. Like, when you see someone run into a room in front of you, and you follow, just waiting to be attacked by a crazy person with a 2x4.
Manhunt was scary in its own little way. Because, guys, suff films are REAL. Ok? They are not urban legends, and they are not myths, they are REAL. And Manhunt, in some ways, was less of an action adventure as it was a simulation of snuff movies, and when you keep this in mind, the game suddenly gets a whole lot darker and twisted, because this has happened to some poor people. It's very deressing and disturbing.
Great game though...

Okay Beakless. I took a look back at F.E.A.R. and started playing again. To my surprise, it really didn't scare me. My dad played through it in about a day on the hardest difficulty. At like, 12 AM to 3 AM. I sat there and watched him the whole time, and he said that the scariest part in the game for him was when Alma would be crawling around behind him, moving boxes and the sort. So I played that level, and I agree'd with him, it was pretty scary. So sorry for my immature post earlier. It wasn't needed. Also, before having two of my Steam accounts stolen, I hadn't had the pleasure of trying The Hidden. I thought it was stupid from the screenshots, so I never tried it. I may go and "grab" a copy of HL2 and try it out.

The genius of it is, it's even scary to play as the Hidden. Not knowing if they can see your blur, making sure you aren't knocking things over (unless you have a quick escape route, in which case knocking things over is a great psych strategy), watching out for trip-alarms...

The best part is to mess with the IRIS. Start throwing things, and people start to get scared and edgy. They start to develop a trigger finger. Then once the run out of ammo.... well lets just say, they won't be scared anymore.

Hehe, yep. I played against a great Hidden once, in the map with the XBox easter egg. He picked it up and started running in circles around me, and I'm panicking and firing my shotgun blindly (and laughing at the same time)... by pure luck I killed him, but that was a great "waste ammo" tactic on his part.

I can agree to that. I love Manson, but "Personal Jesus" should be left to Johnny Cash and Depeche Mode.
Then again, his cover songs were never that great, except for "Sweet Dreams", which is a perfect example of why I like him. He managed to take a fairly innocent 80's pop hit, barely change any of the lyrics, and still make the song mean something completely different.
Then you've got his original lyrics, which are often intricate webs of wordplay and commentary.
I'm fanboy-rambling again... lol
So... yeah... the topic... hmm... what to say about Penumbra.... I've got nothin'.

I'm having a bit of trouble installing Afraid of Monsters. The installer won't work. It says:
"The installer you are trying to use is corrupted or incomplete.
This could be the result of a damaged disk, a failed download or a virus.
You may want to contact the author of this installer to obtain a new copy.
It may be possible to skip this check using the /NCRC command line switch
(NOT RECOMMENDED)."
I have tried to download from like, 5 different locations, all of which have given the same error message. I have scanned the file for a virus, nothing has been found.
What is this "/NCRC" command line switch it speaks of? How do I use it?

I think it has to do with the Cyclic Redundancy Check your computer runs every time something's added to the hard drive. Try downloading some other files. If you get CRC errors on them, your hard drive might be failing.

It's gonna be a prequel to that story. There gonna be more details and in-depth view about the characters of Overture and Black Plague - at least that's what they say. Plus, they want to make it much more based on puzzles. It will be still an atmospheric game, but very puzzle-based. Sounds exciting. One way or another, i'm getting it for sure ;)
Btw, i guess there will be more dangerous enemies than those... Overture's puppies :p
Like the... ones (trying not to be... spoily here) in Black Plague, where fighting=suicide - they should keep it that way... just ten times more
