At first, it seems like it's just to play around with, but then you realise "Wait... I could pile up different types together, so all my game shortcuts could be over there, all my folders over there, etc. etc.". I can't wait for this!

Well, it is kinda fun to play around with those desktop icons, i guess, but i am not sure if it'll work with windows vista (yes i've got vista ^^)

I like Vista. Because of of DX10 and the new look. Oh and being able to sign in with your Xbox 360 Live Profile, to verse people playing on Vista and Xbox 360.
IMO Vista is worth it. No doubt alot of people hate it for some reason. (sorry for being off topic)

This is quite handy, but really. I'm so used to the "old style" I think this would be tricky to get used to.

Yeaa, giving Fun-Motion a exclusive preview of this thing would really boost F-Ms' reputation. And we would get more people to this (already very nice) forum. By the way, wouldn't it lower the computers performance in games if you have a 3d desktop?

That would be a great promotion for bolth partys!
Duh it would lower your gaming... It still takes up cpu!

Who are you to say that it would lower gaming performance? Have you used Vista's Aero interface yet? While it is true that the interface using GPU power when it is in focus, once you load up a game the entire interface unloads, freeing up the processing power that would otherwise be in use. So lets not jump to conclusions now.
Anyway, while this is certainly cool and I may download it to mess around for an hour or so, there is no way this is going to catch on as a desktop replacement. It's simply too graphically-intensive, and actually seems *more* cluttered and impractical.
OwlHuntr
03-22-2007, 11:21 PM
No way! This will definetly catch on, personally, like many gamers and programmers, i have a shitload of icons on my desktop, and i can't delete them, In eed them all. So i just take them and put them in a pile. Also if you don't like the piles, justput it into the grid explode and pressure lock, same old icon concept, but in 3D.

Yes but Owl has a point. It would probaly be somthing I would use! (Once I get a new computer). It would also be a great thing to brag to your friends about!
How far are you in the development process? and how much is it going to be priced at?

Just think of one thing with this 3d physics desktop : it's only useful for a folder full of DOCUMENTS.
Imagine you go browsing in any kind of way in a game data folder : you'll have thousand of little files, filling the entire room; it will be very difficult to find anything, let alone finding the EXE to run the program.
And if it's only intended to represent your desktop, how do you access folders ? In this program, it seems more or less that folders are piles. So you'd have your whole hard disk on screen ? What a mess !
I was impressed too when I saw this program, but I think it's more a toy than something really useful, and it doesn't seem suitable for any kind of system, even mac :-) !

I think this tool would be handy for maybe a casual computer user who has an OK computer and doesn't do anything too complicated at all. For anyone else I feel it would be impractical. I would still love to try it though!

For the curious, the website for the project is here: http://bumptop.com/
I feel like I've seen something like this before for Linux systems that was actually downloadable, but perhaps I'm mistaken. The features are quite interesting, and I'd like to at least try it, but I think it may be overly complex and just get in the way of file organization, rather than helping. But with a little practice...
Edit: Project Looking Glass (http://www.sun.com/software/looking_glass/) Is what I was thinking of earlier, but there are no physics as far as I can tell. Also, it's programmed in Java, so I have to question how fast it is...

SataMaXX: Alright, read : "Physics DESKTOP"
This will replace the desktop, the rest will also be handled in a special way but I won't tell how. You'll see when it's released.
Relys: Priced?! I don't beleive that we are pricing it. Maybe for charity but it should follow GNU liscense. It will all be sorted out in the end. It's along pretty far but a release date is unknown and cannot be estimated at this point.
For those who are impatient... it'll be done when it's done.

For CHRIST'S sake. Java IS NOT SLOW. There are 3 types of Java, desktop, which is only 2 to 5% slower than C++ code, a slower (80% of the desktop Java's speed) meant for lower-end systems, like Palms. And lastly, the very slow and inefficient JAVA Microsystem used in CELLPHONES. You are thinking of the last one. That is not JAVA, That is J2ME.
So please, no-one else say Java is slow. o.o
OwlHuntr: I think it's awesome, but I doubt you should hurry any much, or else it'll be incomplete when it's released.

I'd have fun for about an hour but then all the novelty would wear off. Other people may have a different opinion but I think that it would actually clutter your desktop. (I have 4 icons on mine and I appreciate desktop background art)
Trooth
03-27-2007, 02:33 AM
Yeah, I don't think this is something I'd really use... Though it's a pretty novel idea. I don't like my real-life cluttered desk, so I don't really need a second one. =P I tried Sphere XP at one point, but the novelty of that one also wore off pretty quickly.

One word "search"...
Do you think you will really accept having to rely on search everytime you want to find a particular document, when you can have them all sorted in nice folders in an organized tree and access them in a couple of clicks ?
If you could look at my desk, or even my whole apartment, you'd just see a mess of piles of papers, DVD/CD, books... in which I have to go through each time I want to find anything. The only place where everything is really sorted and nifty is my hard disk, and I think it's utter nonsense to bring my real life mess to my computer.
I think this program is just a toy, with which I'd have fun for a couple hours, then I'd probably uninstall it, or just run it to show friends.... then uninstall it eventually ! :-D
Beside, I really hate when I see someone's computer desktop full of shortcuts, videos, musics, and even installed programs ! A computer is NOT a desk.....it's a computer.

No it wouldn't. I just got heated up because people keep calling Java slow. And it isn't. AT ALL.
Also, don't post just for saying that. It is basically spam.
PS. I wasn't being angry or anything in that other post, I was just trying to make sure everyone got what I was saying.

I think I know what you mean. When I get mad I do not even bother replying.
But when people say things that are not correct but they think it is that starts to annoy me (for example, what valpster just said)
