"Ouch Lol, weve spammed 3 different threads now."

"me and you fail me did like 5.if its when noones on, noone cares. usually."

This is bad, I'm sure you'll agree
It shows that mods (mod) are not active and there's not enough, though it pains me to say it, fear. Fear is a bad thing but we need small amounts of fear to enforce the rules.

What do people think?

I think the spam would decrease dramatically with an off-topic forum.

Hmm, I am undecided about an off-topic forum
on one hand, yes, it would decrease spam and it would be nice
but
on two hands, there are other forums for that

A few real-world matters came up for me to deal with, so I decided to take advantage of that and experiment with a more laissez-faire approach to moderating. I've been peeking in on threads at random and checking for spambots, but I didn't read every single post because I wanted to see whether people would use the Report Post function. However, there have been zero reported posts (or maybe one).

Come this weekend, I'll look back through the last several pages of threads and see whether considerable violations of the forum rules have gone unreported. If so (and, admittedly, I'm expecting that to be the case), I'll be back to "intense scrutiny mode".

As I find myself saying quite often: if you see a problem, use the Report Post function. Doing so takes only a few seconds, and it really helps the moderation team -- no, better said, it really helps the entire F-M community when you personally pitch in just a little bit.

I think people don't really use the Report Post function for spam (at least not around here, since there's so much of it). I, at least, save it for when someone does something really stupid that no one seems to take notice of.

Just... N-G, we have a GOODDAMN ICQ-CHAT FOR CHATTING!!

Xerxes

That's like saying "go start an IM chatroom if you want to talk." I found their posts, and they were way too off-topic, but still. A temporary ban would be best for that.

Or at least a fucking shout box, or off-topic zone.

ahh, there it is

They deserved it, that's bad bad spammings
and they knew they were doing it and didn't stop
They've read the rules, they should know better

Treat this as an example to all of everyone
SPAM = BAN

and the report button needs to be more obvious
and maybe say the word report

I can't change the graphic for the button, but I'll show what the button looks like in the Forum Guidelines sticky. Good suggestion; thanks for bringing that up.

I kinda got to agree. Maybe 7 day ban should have been better?

yes, but almost everyone, me included, would forget. I KNEW that was the report button, I just couldn't REMEMBER. I think you need to talk to Matthew about it.

Regardless of the length of a ban -- from one day to permanent -- the rank tag still reads "Banned". So maybe less backseat moderating should have been better? ;)

This isn't a Nazi regime, this is a messageboard. They are supposed to be fun, you shouldn't have to worry about being banned for one little mistake.

Sure, we were wayyy off-topic, but is it really all that hard to get back on topic? No, it's easier to just let the topic come back on it's own than to report people to mods and wait for the mods to get online and delete posts and bring down the ban-hammer and such.

I agree that there needs to be structure, but I think you all saying "O sevvin day ban 4 off topik lolz" is just absolutely outrageous. Not only is that practically impossible to enforce, but by saying that you are a complete hypocrite since every member of every forum ever made has definitely posted off-topic a couple of times.

And yes, having an off-topic section WOULD MOST DEFINITELY help spam and off-topic conversations. If you think otherwise you are wrong. I have been posting in forums long enough to know a thing or two. I still cannot come close to understanding why Matthew still has not made an off-topic section yet.

And a chatroom is not the same as an off-topic section, so for the love of Christ, please don't say "take it to the chatroom".

P.S. Sorry if I sound like a complete asshole in this post, but I'm very annoyed at the way some of you all are acting because of some off-topic conversations. We should all be working together to try and make this the best place it can be, not going around telling other people they are being bad and not following the rules.

N00bs don't understand why there's no off-topic.. Even I don't...

This question is inevitability going to show up over and over and over again, because new people will join, and will wonder why the fuck there's not a off-topic section...

Are you seriously claiming you did nothing (very little) wrong?
Not only did you break the rules, you knew you broke the rules and did it on purpose.

You Fail Me

Funny thing about a conversation is, you don't really realize what's going on around you until you stop talking to the other person for a second. As in, it kinda took me a couple minutes of bullshitting with him to realize how off-topic we were, then I said "Man, seems all we do is derail threads" and then I slowed it down. At least, that's what happened as far as I can remember.

And I'm not claiming I didn't do anything wrong, I know I was off-topic, I just think that saying that people should be banned for posting off-topic is fucking ludicrous. Message boards are supposed to be fun.

There's a difference between real spam and goofing off with an internet friend.

muffinmonkey
11-26-2007, 05:44 AM
Yes,and I'm not saying "TAKE IT TA TAH CHATRM" but now your offtopic ramblings are clogging up that thread forever and that's a very bad thing. And what would you suggest we do?

give you 3 chances?

ok, oh wait, you used them up. :D

Sorry, but increased security may be needed. I think people save the report button for the most horrible violations. I.e. posting gore/shock pics everywhere. Increased use of the report for flames, spam, etc. should be standardized.
Because if we take no action, will it go away?

P.S. An off-topic section would help remove "When I'm done, lock" topics and the unrelated ones that other people make for no reason. Apart from that, and the fact for other topics of conversation with fun-motion members, I can't see any other reasons.

muffinmonkey
11-28-2007, 06:24 AM
I think "Lock this when I'm done" ones should be deleted afterwards
but that's beside the point
the point is
Matthew replied to my e-mail

Hey [my name goes here],

Thanks for the heads up—I’m in Montreal this week for a conference, but I’ll check it out first thing when I get back.

Meh, I'll start checking every thread again. I do think it's hypocritical of everyone to say "USE JENSON BUTTON LOLOL" whenever a newbie posts a thread without being aware of proper forum conduct, but then refusing to use the "Report" button.

Why not? That's the issue at hand here. If we don't have anywhere to discuss off-topic things, of course they're gonna happen in places that should not be off-topic.
