View Full Version : Backseat Moderating

This issue has come to my attention recently. I continually keep seeing people doing the Moderators' jobs. I mean in the sense of trying to put people in place. People are continually flaming for being offtopic one or two posts, flaming over opinions (I mean this is a forum, a place where we express our ideas and discuss them, not flame the hell out of each other for disagreements), flaming for repeat threads (when we could calmly explain to the person why the repeat is bad), flaming for necro's (when simple and calm approaches would suffice), and much more. I find this a problem because this community (while still extremely higher than most forums) is starting to turn into something that DRL has become. Although we are a long way away from this, I find that continually flaming, and constant backseat moderating are starting to make this community less member friendly. There are multiple ways of solving this, but this is up to the mods and Matthew to decide (if there will even be a solution).
Those are my opinions and I feel that we should attempt to stop this as soon as possible.

I vote... 5 achievements. Also, the "no flaming" rule has been really loosely enforced around here. It's okay sometimes when you kiss and make up afterwards, but it gets really annoying when people take up our valuable server space withe their stupid flame wars.
If the people who've been doing the flaming say they're justified because the person shouldn't have done it in the first place... NOT A GOOD EXCUSE. If someone does that, just ignore them, especially if it's a necro. Then the thread will die. Also, being "slightly drunk" should no longer be considered valid...

But posting on forums whilst slightly drunk is pure joy.
But on a more serious note, I have been noticing a lot of this, and yes it not very newbie friendly, but who wants to be on a forum where everyone is constantly hugging and kissing each other's asses? Where is the fun in that?

Yeah, sorry about that. Please forgive me.

I don't think it's a serious problem yet but it needs to be nipped in the bud before we turn this happy place into a sad place. People need to not flame and possibly the thread delete option should be used more often especially for repeat threads.

I try my best to keep up with posts, but one moderator alone can't do it all. The others seem to have gone missing. :p That being said, I consider someone to be flaming when that individual outright insults another member. Normal, sensible arguments are okay from my point of view.
