I'm working on this and Stramash at the same time to keep my motivation levels up. I intend to finish both games. The engine uses position based particle physics and verlet integrator. The physics are all my own work and programmed from scratch using Blitz3d.

Hope you like. I'll have another playable demo in a month or so - maybe sooner.

Oh, and yes the level is one big mesh but I use a proxy mesh which is even lower poly to reduce collision checks and give a speed boost.

Oh Stieve G, you are quickly becoming one of my favourite indy physics game developers. Both this and Stramash are very appealing to me in terms of graphics and gameplay, they look amazing. Please, finish both of these.

Thanks, I'll do my best but I'm in no rush. I was actually working on Stramash today - implementing a much better friction and stacking model. This came about while doing friction work on my 3d vehicle engine so working on both is prooving to be a good idea. The results are very good so far - this guy is resting here quite comfortably ..

I love this demo it would be cool if you could knock over some of the objects like the statues or the trees. the vehicles are great but you need to add specials for the all. also it would be great if you could add in game events like meteors or turning the mountian into a volcano. another great vehicle addition would be planes. i have one question though will this game be a racing game or what?

You can shoot with RETURN but there is no elevation control using keys.

Volcanoes and knocking over statues aint gonna happen - don't be silly.

I have a whole bunch of mini game ideas, here a just a few ( thing world party with vehicles ) -

i like smashing into the pig cars (police) and knocking them flying :D

Would it be feasible to allow players to control some of the other vehicles? I am guessing this might be a pain to implement but it would be cool, unless it already is implemented of course in which case why can't i control a helicopter!!!

Very nice demo and can't wait to see how it turns out :cool:

Well it looks quite good already! I'd definatley get it...

But I'm not shure this will be a good racing game. And I say that because I noticed in the video you racing againt a ghost... now, I think you have to consider the physics in you're game and decide what gamemodes would suit t best...

This game definatley will be very fun during the deathmatch-style parts, but I can't see myself enjoying the racing parts with that surreal 'toy' physics...

Not having a go. Just saying what I think...

Deathmatch style is main thing I'm thinking here ... customisable team set ups ... where the options are endless e.g.

* Take out 10 tanks in a chopper in a set time limit
* See how long you can last in the offroad with 10 chopper after you etc...
* I'll include the ability for the player to swap between different vehicles in some modes ...
* A high platform where you have to knock each other off.
* Stunt track where you have to collect things in a time limit.
* Football with huge goals and tanks as the players with the ball being a van
* A flag spawns and first to get it gets a point and it's respawned randomly - first to 10 wins

All ideas will play well imo but I'm open to more

I can understand that you want to keep the racing... But how about jazzing it up a bit, like the option to add power-ups and cool tracks with traps... whatever, man you're the programmer

Oh and those two Ideas are made of EPIC WIN!!! It would be killer if there some kind of online to top it all off...

I can't quite put my finger on it, but this reminds me more and more of Toy Commander which isn't a bad thing, in fact, it's a brilliant thing (it's about time someone made a clone of Toy Commander with better physics). Perhaps you could add some house maps like, a kitchen where you are a small toy car/helicopter/whatever. I would love for that to be in the game.

Q / A / S / D, F to fire, TAB to change car and one of the F keys to change camera - I forget which.


That Toy Commander sounds interesting - never heard of it until now but I'm not aiming for the same thing - more an RC kids look and feel.

I added heat-seaking missiles to the choppers as a secondary weapon this afternoon. Great fun!!

I've been playing 1 on 1 deathmatches with some mates - offroad vs chopper :) Seems a bit one sided but it doesn't work out that way 'cos the missile doesn't aquire a target until a second after launch.

Couldn't resist uploading some footage. One of the parts is in slow mo in case your wondering. I'm the offroad vehicle.

Well, no deformation? It will look kind of weird because in real life if a offroad truck gets shot with a heat seeking missile it will blow up. And if you hit a rock, your car would be damaged, not the same. Still, I love this game. :)
But it all doesn't have to be real. If your aiming for an arcade thingy, then ok. Still, I like my deformation Idea. :(

Deformation does not suit this game. I want raw speed and playability for older spec machines. I can have 50 vehicles running around at a constant 50++fps on a P43ghz and shitty Gfx440mx. Deformation is total overboard and unecessary for this type of game so it definately won't be happening. All I can say is that it is an obsolute hoot already and I'm spending more time playtesting that coding :)

There is no playable demo for v1.6. Once I've set up a few mini games I'll release another demo.

I was wondering if you were going to give specials to the other cars to like the hover car could have mines but they get destroyed after theyre hit. or the van could poke knives out of the sides that hurts other cars. i dunno but it would be cool for them all to have specials.

The plan is for them all to have a purpose - not necessarily a weapon but some special ability. I'm open to ideas though.

This is awesome. I found this ages ago and is the most played game on my laptop (free one, that is). My name for it is CarWorld. I just love randomly blowing stuff up in the armoured car or tank.

Update ..

I've added a few new vehicles - cop van & cop truck but the most pleasing addition so far is the ability to attach vehicles to other vehicles or objects via a bungie cord. The possibilities are endless with this. Think deathmatches in a vehicle towing a mine ;) I've added the ability to possess dormant vehicles rather than cycle through them aimlessly. Lastly, ambient effects suck as sun/rain/day night have been added.

You can now also race in any of the vehicles ( including chopper ) with ghost car for timetrial.

Yes. You can choose your team or be a loner in deathmatch and mini games. There will be loads of single players missions where you could be part of a team or a neutral in the middle of a battle. I'm considering 4 player split screen also as network or lan play is not on the cards yet. It's a total bugger to get physics working right over a network. I will consider this in a future iterations though.


Will there be a cops vs. robbers element now?

Definately, that's the plan - I've had a team of police vs the army playing a few times - to cops got their arses kicked. Think 30 cops chasing you and try to survive for 2 minutues - tough going!


Is the ambience user-changeable?


Yes, for custom games. They aren't brilliant atm but will be improved. Ambience will be set for each mission. Skidding round in the rain is great fun.


Will you still be able to cycle through them aimlessly?


Possibly in sandbox mode but not during missions - this is where possession comes into play- it works very well.

THe possessable vehicles are coloured white and don't move. Once you possess a vehicle your original then become possessable and the new vehicle gets coloured to match your team. THey can be destroyed atm - but I might make them invincible when white.

I'll post some screenies of what I mean when my f'ing ftp is working!!

[EDIT] Here's a possessible Humvee and Tank in the background. Just drive close and hit the possess button and voila.

Both are possible.

Olympics - as in long jump ad hurdles - the truck has a special jump button which is much higher than in EngineTest6. I may not bother but we'll see.

Not sure about keyboard support for all 4 players. I'll probably just stick with 2 players tbh. There'll be enough missions in single player to be challenging. Anyone who hasn't played this with a ps2 analogue controller is missing out big time!! You can even configure a wheel and pedal to control the cars.

As far as I know, he isn't releasing a new demo for awhile yet.

Stevie, you say those who don't play it on a PS2 controller are missing out but I think it's much better on a 360 controller because of the triggers, which can be mapped to the "right stick" in the joypad settings feel so much better than pushing on the right stick. You should try it sometime.

Oh, about the bungie cord, is it a rigid connection which stretches or an actual, rope-like structure where the cord can "slack"? The screenshots don't really show it in action.

Any kind of analogue is good - I just prefer the ps2 one cos it sits nicely in my hands.

I've improved the chopper control big time - you can now reduce the height by holding one of the buttons. As a result you can fly under things which is nice! The height thing was needed anyway as you wouldn't be able to possess another vehicle in the chopper otherwise - it does need to land! Swapping between vehicles is going to play a big part in some of the single player missions.

I've also added the option of an invisible wall on the racetracks to stop you falling off and getting frustrated.

Land mines are done and working on a trailer now - so that some vehicles can tow it behind them. I also want to add a towable mini gun - ai controlled but their is the possibility of two players - one driving - one on the gun.

I'll post a few screenies later or tomorrow morning. I'm gonna treat this like a worklog if no-one minds?

I dunno if this has been mentioned, but from that trailer, it reminds me alot of a Shockwave game called Thinktanks which is a good comparison in my opinion. That game was fun. In fact, it's probably still on shockwave.com if anyone wants to check it out.

A minigun on a trailer ... needs a bit of work but you get the jist .. The barrels are set up to rotate when firing :)

That minigun is a new idea. If it does auto-fire, does it work when not attached by bungee? Does it move independently? Is it another vehicle, even?
And if they rotate when firing, doesn't that mean you can shoot yourself?

Can the invisible wall be turned off, so you can ram mates off the sides?

The mini gun won't be a controllable vehicle on it's own - it's only a gun on a trailer after all ;) I'm still working on other things but suspect that it'd be best automatically targetting nearest enemy vehicles. Will see how it works in practice though.

[EDIT] the mini gun will have yaw rotation limited to +-45 degrees or suchlike towards the rear but I meant that the barrel of the gun will spin - like a minigun does.

My minds been playing overtime in terms of the missions / scenarios which I can set up.

I'm planning on having a 'defend the fort' type mission where you control a gun in the middle of the level and waves of tanks etc.. are attacking. If any of them make it through the front gates your toast.

Another great idea for a mission. There is a race going on and you aren't involved but you must make sure that no-one completes the 3 lap race :)

The racing track wall can be turned off but only in custom games - not on missions which require it. Racing with mines in tow in the rain is great fun btw!

It's definately not going to be online I'm afraid. As I mentioned before it's too much effort to get physics working right over a network.

Almost finished the mini-gun trailer. The Truck now has a special ability to connect and disconnect to trailers of the same colour. The truck is my first and favourite vehicle so at least it has a purpose now. You just reverse into them and hit the special button. If you die or it dies the connection is lost. This ability will be good for missions like - find 10 trailers in the level and return them to base etc...

I've added respawning which works nice. I can specify infinite respawns or set a number of lives.

Added fog effects and revamped the sound system. Also added some ambient background sound - i.e. rain, birds chirping, wolves howling etc...

It has an automatic special - it can go fast over land and sea. I can't think of anything that could be of use to it but open to suggestions. It won't be able to run over land mines.

Quick Question ..

I'm working on the scoring system for deathmatches. There are a few ways that a vehicle can be destroyed ..

1. Hit by a bullet / missile / shell
2. Hit by a vehicle
3. Hit by a mine
4. Hard hit against the level scenery

At the moment I have a kill being registered when any of the first 2 happen. I'm testing a mission where the objective is to kill 30 police cars in a tank within a certain time limit. When killed they respawn indefinately so there is always plenty to aim at. They do a good job of killing themselves generally as a result of 2-4 regardless of your actions.

There is a situation where you can knock a car flying by hitting it with a shell. It still has life/health left when in the air so no kill is registered to the player but any of 2-4 can then happen as a result.

The reason I ask is that it's almost impossible to determine whether you were in-directly responsible for the kill in this situation. Any thoughts?

First off: Looks awesome!

Second: I don't think there really is a way to fix that. In a few console games I've played the same thing can happen and you get no points. It's an annoying problem with no real solution...

Also, maybe instead of getting points when any car is hit by any other car, it should just be when the player's vehicle hits it?

EDIT: The art style reminds me of Climbactic and Team Fortress 2 for some reason...

That doesn't seem fair if you're playing a team deathmatch. I'll leave it as is I think.

I dont know of a solution to a problem but i did think f a cool level. your in a truck and your in a city your runnning away from the cops as you navigate the city they start bringing heavier vehicles like helicopters or tanks. what do you think?

First of all, this is amazingly fun and I can't wait to see what sorts of scenarios you come up with.

As for your problem, you might try keeping track of the last player to shoot a vehicle and when. Then you could check if someone deserves a point. For Example: "Player A died from running into a mine and was shot by Player B half a second ago, so award Player B a point since he was most likely responsible."

I thought about this for a while. I already store the last player to hit each vehicle and it should be quite straightforward to only reset it to NULL if someone else hits it or 1-2 seconds have passed.

I assume that mines are insta-death, but even the F1 car could take a hard hit on the scenery and hit by a vehicle. Not lots, but some. So will weaker vehicles have a smaller life bar?

EDIT: Will the F1 car return, even?

Each vehicle has an armour setting between 0 and 1.0 the tank being the highest so even with a hard hit / shelling takes less damage than something with a lower armour.

I've changed the mines slightly. Mines are not instant death - they simply cause and explosion and then damage. You can now drive slowly up to one and push it in front of your vehicle towards other vehicles. Also, you can hit mines of the same colour as your vehicle as hard as you like and they won't explode. Any kind of speed when hitting an ememy mine will do a shit load of damage though.

The F1 has always been there but needs some work in terms of handling ( as do some of the other vehicles. It also needs to be a re-scaled as it seems a bit small atm. It has no special and I have no intention of giving it one so it's a purely racing vehicle which is not suited to any kind of death match or the undulating terrain for that matter. I was thinking of having a Super sprint style race game ( almost overhead camera which is zoomed out to show alot of track ) specifically for it. I'll see how it goes.

I think the police cars are fine. I have all scales ( other than f1 - which I haven't tinkered with for a year ) based on a 6ft tall man - see below. It maybe needs to be a touch longer but not much.

About the custom deathmatch thingie and the ability to choose how many teams and AI opponents there will be... Are there any limits?
I mean can you play with something like 100 AI opponents, or is there a limit of 20 or so?
Damn, even with 40 opponents the game would be EPIC.

It'll be limited to 8 teams, 2 of which can be player controlled. I will be putting a limit per vehicle per team ( probably 50 ) but I doubt whether any pc is capable of running more than 100 vehicles in total in one battle at a decent frame rate. I get about 30 fps with 100 vehicles which is playable but not recommended.

for the whole indirect death problem couldn't you just make it so that you had to have 30 deaths instead of 30 kills (a subtle difference you see)

all deaths are counted as kills

So pretty much - you have 30 lives - last standing wins? I don't think that'd be too good 'cos once your lives are up you can't be involved in the game. I'll figure out a way of doing it better.

Been working on a mini game - first to the light gets a point. It's pretty frantic with 50 vehicles ploughing into each other trying to get there first!

This looks amazing, but could you have it like King of the Hill? So, you have to stay in the light to get points and other cars try and shunt you out.

Good idea but I'd rather just have one big flat plateu hill in the middle of the level and whoever is on it accumulates points.

I think it may be better sticking with a high circular platform , made of ice - so there's very little friction, each car starts on the edge pointing towards the center and the goal is to push everyone off. I'd like to be able to tilt it depending on where the cars are on it but it may not be possible - we'll see though.

Was working on improvements to my random landscape generator yesterday - happy with the results. The colours fade nicely into each other now. Each landscape can be generated based on a single seed, low & highest points. You can also change the colour schemes.

Some good news is that I can easily use the gui system I built for Stramash so it shouldn't take as long to build the menu's. Obviously the options you see are left over from Stramash and will change. Oh, and the name is temporary until I come up with a new one.

Going back to the idea of physical scenery... It wouldn't really be too hard to make a "vehicle" that is part of the scenery. Example. The statue could be a vehicle, but it wouldn't be able to move by itself (no wheels), but it would still be movable because it isn't part of the scenery.

I honestly don't see what purpose that would serve. Sure it is possible but it isn't gonna happen. Remember that I'm a one man band and I don't have alot of spare time. I have a finite list of ideas I want to implement and I need to stick to them or never getting it finished.

Not really anything new. I've been working on the frontend & gui stuff which to be frank bores me to tears.

I should have a short playable demo of some of the mini games out in January but please don't hold me to that as I've been busy doing non-programming stuff over the last few weeks. I have a week off work at the beginning of Jan and plan to put it to good use though.

I still spend more time playing it than I should - some of the emergent behaviour still makes me laugh out loud - e.g. A tank shell blew me into a mine which launched my vehicle into the air, I hit and destroyed a chopper which fell on top of another mine destroying another vehicle :))

Nah ... none of this is possible. The chopper attached to the tank was just to show what was possible. It isn't very practicle.

This is a quick look at one of the mini-games. There are 105 vehicles and 36 objects in this vid. It runs at 45 fps on my setup. Intel Core 2 Due 2.33 with Radion 1900gt.

I'm still getting random errors from time to time so once I resolve them I'll post a playable demo.

I've been working on the background meshes ( sky / clouds etc.. ) for a nicer effect which I think works well. I also added a flying saucer that beams the light which you need to drive to. Once you touch the light it retracts it and buggers off quickly to another part of the level. This particular mini game is almost done :

They'll be no day / night cycle - just the option to choose at the beginning of each round or preset in single player missions.

There will be snow / ice levels - the skidding is great so it's a must.

Still undecided on all the vehicles which'll make it into the game but probably most from EngineTest6 and some new ones.

The old demo has the chopper armour set too high + you need to use an analogue stick to change the elevation of the barrel. I forget but the elevation extremes are probably higher in the current version. Bear in mind that EngineTest6 was the 42nd iteration of the engine - I'm currently on the 102nd so there ALOT of improvements / additions and changes from the old version.

No animals ( other than the shark of course ) - they don't fit - it's purely vehicle based. There will be neutral vehicles though.

Boats / hovercraft and sharks will make good use of the water. All other vehicles are slowed down by water drag and sink. If they go below a certain depth they will loose health. I have some decent bouyancy physics so some objects float better than others etc..

If the game spawned you on a tiny island, there would be no way to get off of it and complete whatever mission is happening. Unless you have specified respawn points....

I'm planning on having bridges over the deeper water to connect land masses but yes, most of the time the water will be shallow enough for you to take no damage ( even if you do it will be relatively small ), although you will be slowed down due to increased drag.

I'd rather you didn't clutter the thread asking 100's of questions. Why not have a think about ALL your questions and list them in one post?

This is a vehicle only game - there are no people. Pedestrian and police vehicles can be set up as well as team vehicles.

How do you add water into the terrain generator? Do you set a depth and then build around it? Can you have waves that affect the motion of your vehicle e.g. tidal waves? Can the water be higher in certain places than others?

Possible release date yet?

Basically the terrain is a gdi of control points for bezier patches. If you make one of the points lower than sea level the resulting patches may create a pool. I also have an editor tool where you can remove specific areas of the landscape to create rivers.

The water is basically at sea level, I have no plans for tidal waves etc..

No where near a release date I'm afraid.

I'm in the process of adding a bridge building tool so that bridges can be easily created between landmasses and / or over water. The editor is very versatile , though not so user friendly atm.

The AI is WIP but yes, this will be the case. Although, the homing missiles will home in on the closest vehicle after 1 sec so you need to be careful with them.

Sorry - been at work all day.


Edit the setup.cfg file in the config folder and change the players to 2.

I forget the keys ( QASD maybe ) but joypads can be set up no problem using the joypad.exe in the same folder.

I had a great Idea using the old demo provided about making a YouTube series called "A Day at the Fun-Motion Community ________" by placing the same number of cars as there is active members here at F-M and just basically recording the events that happen in-game. Each webisode would feature a different level (for e.g. the Raceway track would result it that show's title to be called "A Day at the Fun-Motion Community Race Track" or something like that)

I would do it, but having the title of "Owner of the Most Crappiest Computer In The World" I don't think my computer wouldn't handle being able to play the game and record at the same time. I get around 15 FPS with just around 50 vehicles.

And great engine, when I try to do car games, sometimes the wheel stick on the ground, sometimes the wheel shake like crazy......

It's actually going very well.

Some Updates :

Still working on parts of the gui - key and joypad config mainly. At the moment it's a standalone module but I will integrate into the main game shortly.

Implemented 1-4 players split screen. Runs at a decent frame rate too with some settings lowered.

I've improved the camera's alot. They pan out automatically if you are dragging another object. They also contantly adjust to keep the vehicle you're controlling in view.

Auto Verticle Aim. I added this for keyboard users so that they didn't have to worry about weapon elevation so needed less keys to configure. You will have to point the weapon in the correct direction so it's still tricky. I may make this a permanent feature as it works well.

MiniGame - "Copland" implemented. Played and refined this over the weekend with a few mates. You each control an offroad and have to towe mines, landmines on the level to take out as many relentlessly chasing cop cars as you can before your single life runs out. Best score wins. It's pretty hilarious running into a group of them and getting flung into the air by the blast of your mine as it smacks off them all.

The missions will be for single player and allow you to unlock new levels / vehicles / mini games as you make progress.

The alpha demo will only have deathmatch , the light, timetrial and copland minigames. I haven't worked on the AI much yet so it won't be fully implemented for the demo - it'll be mainly a compatibility test.

I like this new CopLand idea, but can you change it so you have a time limit to kill as many cops as possible?

As a minigame it's 'first to' a predefined score ( 2-8 teams, 4 of which are can be player controlled ) and you have infinite lives as do the copcars. The single player mission/challenges will mainly be time limit based ... 3 minutes to kill 30 cops.


Do the cops have a smaller health bar than you?


Each of the Police vehicles has a specific armour rating, the car having the least so is easier to kill.


I'm prototyping a 'Survival' mini-game where everyone has 5 lives and the level is full of tanks .. last man standing wins.

Getting closer to releasing a short demo but still plenty to do :)

Sorry - no idea - it's be cheap though. I'll need to wait and see if any publishers ( and more importantly players ) like it first. Failing that it'll be free.


Been working on some mesh based rain effects .. the whole game now uses one 64x64 texture. Old GUI still to be changed.

Looks good. Can I just have a list of the minigames?
There's deathmatch, copland, survival and the light. I also remember a last man standing and a knock-everyone-else-off-a-small-platform mode.
Will there be Team Deathmatch i.e. half the vehicles against the other half, CTF and a sandbox (like the current demo)?

I have a huge list of over 25 mini-games ideas which I hope to implement. No point in listing them all until I know they work and are fun. Now that I have some decent AI up and running it's relatively quick to set up new ones. I'm only going to include a taster of 3-4 in the alpha demo though. Still on shedule for the end of this month.
